The best-seller was a Kingman filly out of Shyrl, who was offered byTally-Ho Stud and bought by Godolphin for 850,000gns. The award ceremony itself, due to take place in November, has already had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Cartier has agreed to continue support for the 2020 accolades, which will still be awarded this year.
His sire Buratino had made a winning debut in March of his juvenile season and already had three victories, including at Listed level, and two second places from five outings when he lined up at Royal Ascot for the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes. He took the lead off Air Force Blue inside the final furlong and kept on well to beat him by two lengths, and later added Gr.1 places in the Phoenix Stakes and Middle Park Stakes to his CV. From the family of Champion Sire Danehill Dancer, he has been standing this season for €5,000 and has a first crop of 88. Three races later, Kraken Power raced clear of his opponents in the 6f maiden to become the first winner for The Last Lion. The Iain Jardine-trained colt, also a graduate of the Goffs November Foal Sale and Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, had only been beaten a head on his debut nine days ago. The Last Lion only raced at two but managed ten outings between April and September 2016. He was never out of the first three, picking up four wins, including in the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes and Gr.3 Sirenia Stakes, and he was placed in three other Pattern contests. A half-brother to two Listed winners, he is out of a Gr.1-placed half-sister to the Gr.1-winning juvenile and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Tarascon and has a first crop of 45 juveniles.
These are the standings to 21st June:
