The Romans called the area nostra provincia or ‘our province’ for the none latin speaker, giving the region its name. Situated just to the south of the Alps, it was the first Roman province outside Italy. Wine has been made in this region for at least 2,600 years, ever since the ancient Greeks founded the city of Marseille in 600 BC. Throughout the region’s history, viticulture and winemaking have been influenced by the cultures that have been present in Provence, which include the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Gauls, Catalans and Savoyards. These diverse groups introduced a large variety of grapes to the region, including grape varieties of Greek and Roman origin as well as Spanish, Italian and traditional French wine grapes. Today the region is known predominantly for its rosé wine, though wine critics such as Tom Stevenson believe that region’s best wines are the spicy, full-flavoured red wines. Rosé wine currently accounts for more than half of the production of Provençal wine, with red wine accounting for about a third of the region’s production. White wine is also produced in small quantities throughout the region with the Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) region of Cassis specializing in white wine production. The Côtes de Provence is the largest AOC followed by the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence. The Bandol region near Toulon is one of the more internationally recognized Provençal wine regions France : Provence Domaine d’Eole Based on the Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, this small producer has decicated themselves to making top notch wines. The domaine d’Eole is a welcome new estate to our range. Price HT Price TTC OFP03 AOC Coteaux d’Aix en Provence Rosé 2011 50cl 7,73 9,25 OFP04 AOC Coteaux d’Aix en Provence Rosé 2011 75cl 9,20 11,00 The colour of pale rose petals with bright hints of the lightest purple, this rosé is sublime with hints of red and citrus fruits. A full and long finish, this is a serious rosé for drinking with the finest Provençal cuisine. A joy to behold! Mas de Longchamp This small estate is based near the mouth of the Rhone, just by the Alpilles national park. In this Provençal haven of beauty, the team of Fabrice Benoit make a range of great red and rosé wines. OFP05 VDP Bouche du Rhone Rosé 2011 50cl 4,60 5.50€ 60% grenache and 40% Caladoc. A pale rosé from the mouth of the rhone, situated close to St. Remy de Provence. Subtle fruits, refreshing acidity and a long clean finsih make this a superb choice for summer drinking! RFP02 VDP Alpilles Rouge 2011 75cl 4,60 5.50 60% grenache and 40% merlot. The red wines of provence are not as famous as their White and Rosé counterparts, but they can be very good. This red is a fresh and sprightly style that is perfect with goats cheese or even a rack of BBQ ribs. France : Provence Domaine le Clos du Pavillon - Uncertified Price HT Price TTC OFP07 VDP du Var Lady L Rosé 2010 75cl 9,20 11,00€ “Lady L“ is a rosé that can only be described as unique in modern wine making terms. Fourteen separate varieties of grapes are hand harvested, separately vinified and then carefully blended to make a wine of incredible complexity and depth of flavour. Layers of fruit, which evolve in the glass over allowing each mouthful to be a new discovery. The domain’s tiny production of less than 5000 bottles each year mean this wine is of limited availability. Domaine de la Sauveuse BFP01 AOC Côtes de Provence Blanc Château de la Sauveuse 2011 7,94 9,50 This oak aged Rolle, gives this sometimes difficult grape a real bonus. Well used oak ageing adds a roundness to this other wise fresh and fruity number. Citrus and honey abound, which makes this a great wine with salad Niçois. A provençal treat. OFP01 AOC Côtes de Provence Rosé Château de la Sauveuse 2011 7,94 9,50 The 2011 is lighter in colour than previous vintages, but the trade mark fruit and minerality we have come to expect from this rosé is still very apparent. A top notch rosé from Puget-Ville. France : Rhone The Rhône wine region in Southern France is situated in the Rhône river valley and produces numerous wines under various Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) designations. The region’s major appellation in production volume is Côtes du Rhône AOC. The Rhône is generally divided into two sub-regions with distinct vinicultural traditions, the Northern Rhône (referred to in French as Rhône septentrional) and the Southern Rhône (in French Rhône méridional). The northern sub-region produces red wines from the Syrah grape, sometimes blended with white wine grapes, and white wines from Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier grapes. The southern sub-region produces an array of red, white and rosé wines, often blends of several grapes such as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grignan-les-Adhémar is situtaed in the northern section of the southern Rhône., it was formally known until 2010 as Coteaux du Tricastin. Vacqueyras is also situated in the southern Rhône, with bets wines coming from the slopes around the Montélimar. While many of the region’s wines have higher Syrah (Shiraz) contents, we work with producers using more Grenache, as we believe this adds more elegance to their wines. Rhône wines are great partners to lamb dishes and in the UK are the biggest selling wines in restaurants, due their ablity to match a wide variety of food options. France : Côtes Du Rhône Clos de Caveau - Vacqueyras A superb estate based at the top end of Vacqueyras, the estate is surrounded on three sides by the more famous Gigondas. Using a blend of Grenache and Syrah, owner Henri Bungener, has worked non-stop to improve his wines. From sourcing superb oak barrels to micro-fermentaions to create a flavour map of his vineyard, Henri is always looking for ways to bring the best out of his magnificent soils. With the addition of his new labels, Henri’s wines now look the part as well as tasting it! Price HT Price TTC RFR02 AOC Vacqueyras Fruit Sauvage 2008 8,78 10,50 You can taste the passion in this fabulously earthy Rhône red. A powerful liquorice-scented red. Spicy Syrah delivers abundant fruits and a weighty palate that carries the flavour for what seems like an eternity. Will age magnificently. RFR04 AOC Vacqueyras Carmin Brilliant 2007 50 cl 9,62 11,50 RFR03 AOC Vacqueyras Carmin Brilliant 2009 75cl 13,80 16,50 RFR08 AOC Vacqueyras Carmin Brilliant 2009 150cl 28,43 34,00 Spirited and delicious red that will thank you to be drunk with food. Herbal, mulberry-flavoured red that’s won a heap of medals and praise from some of the world’s leading wine critics. It`s very concentrated with more than its fair share of cassis-soaked fruits. Opulent and delicious. RFR06 AOC Vacqueyras Lao Muse 2007 75 cl 23,41 RFR07 AOC Vacqueyras Lao Muse 2007 150 cl 28,00 50,17 60,00 The jewel in the crown of Clos de Caveau’s beautiful wine range. Second fill barrels, purchased from Chateau’s Yquem and Haut- Smith-Lafite, are used to ensure only the maturation benefits of oak are seen on this wine. Concentrated fruit, majestically balanced acidity and a depth of tannin, minerality and structure which is hard to beat. France : Vallée Du Rhône Mas Théo - Grignan-les-Adhémar Price HT Price TTC RFR05 AOC Grignan-les-Adhémar Cuvée TO 2009 75cl 5,02 6,00 QV TO is made from a blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache by Laurent Clapier at Mas Théo. Soft round fruit and a hint of spice on the finish make this medium bodied Rhone a real pleasure to drink. A great summer red, as it has neither to high an alcohol level or too much tannin to knock you over on a sunny afternoon.
