In his ledger book he en- up into parishes, each with its own church build- tered the farm produce that he sold. The first two ing and also an area of land called ‘the glebe’ entries read: April 19 Matthew Bristow 17 lambs at Iwhich was assigned to support the priest. Above: The site of Parsonage Farm today, just off Ewhurst Road Left: A page in James Puttock’s ledger book about Parsonage Farm in 1819 in 1916, when an elderly farmworker fell from a hayrick he was building. He was taken to the Vil- lage Hospital, but died four days later. But where precisely were the Parsonage Farm buildings? Nobody seemed to know. Surprisingly, the deeds of a house in St Nicolas Avenue supplied the answer. An Act of Parliament of 1888 made it legal for a parish to sell some of its glebe land and continued on page 8 advertise your business both online @ www.cranleighmagazine.co.uk and on this page 7 CRANLEIGH MAGAZINE Above: Ordnance Survey map of 1871/4 reinvest the proceeds in other assets, notably gov- ernment stock.
