My research about Las Vegas revealed that geographically, Las Vegas is located in a basin in the Mojave Desert and is surrounded by dry mountain ranges. According to the National Weather Service, Las Vegas receives only 4.2 inches of rain per year. The city of Las Vegas is considered the Entertainment Capital of the World. The Office of Travel and Tourism Industries with the U.S. Department of Commerce notes that Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations. I hope you will take some time to go to a show or visit one of many tourist attractions. An exciting schedule is planned for this year’s conference! Dr. Norman Lownds, Director of the Children’s Garden at Michigan State University will deliver the Tex Frazier Lecture titled “Seeds of Science: Connecting Kids, Plants and Science in the Michigan 4-H Children’s Gardens”. Other keynote speakers include Dr. Larry Smart discussing hemp research, Dr. Harry Klee discussing biochemical genetics in tomatoes, and Dr. Roger Kjelgren discussing tree response to climate change. Are you more interested in focusing on your own horticultural interests? There is a plethora of scientific oral and poster presentations from which to choose! Check out the schedule and use the scheduling tool to help plan your time at the conference. Maybe you are more interested in touring sites of interest in the area. You may tour Hoover Dam or see vineyards of Nevada. Regardless of your individual interest when participating in the conference, there will be plenty of time to renew friendship with colleagues from “back then” and now. I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities presented at the conference and in the city of Las Vegas! I would like to thank our sponsors of this year’s conference. E&J Gallo Winery, Ball, Regent Instruments, and the American Floral Endowment provided financial support for the conference. We appreciate the support of each of these sponsors in making this event possible. Janet C.
