Garrard: My Grandfather, of whom I have a medallion, having lost money in Peruvian bonds, returned to India again & died there, when my father was at Addiscomb which was then the military college for officers in the East India Army. While my father was in India he took part in actions during the Indian Mutiny, being in command of a force of the 27th Madras Native Infantry at Lumptee on 2 February 17, 2004 August 29th 1857, in conjunction with the Naval brigade from the HMSS Pearl (they had screw steamers in those days) under Lieutenant Faukes and a detachment of Her Majesty's 13th Light OInfantry; forcing the 150 Sowars, 300 Sepais & 1900 regular troops to retreat, and again at Amorha. At the close of the Mutiny & during the readjustment when the East India Company's affairs were taken over by the Imperial Government, Father having been advised by his Doctor after an attack of illness, Jungle fever I believe, that he should not continue in India, and having been there 20 years, took advantage of the offer then made of an extra 20 pounds per annum besides his pension and retired. Being then 37-38 years old he married Mother in 1862 (Eliza Mary Burdett, daughter of Sir Charles Wentworth Burdett) she being then 21 years old. He bought the Boar's Head pub in Friar St, and the attached brewery that reached back to Merchant's Place, from the family of the previous owner,Thomas Flory, in 1785. In 1843 William Garrard's heirs sold the pub, and presumably the brewery. The pub was demolished in October 2003.
