This is an interview with Stephanie Smith Kinney. Stephanie and I are old friends. And this is bein done on behalf of the Association for Diplomatic Studies, and I am Charles Stuart Kennedy. Stephanie, let's start at the be innin . (hen and where were you born) KINNEF1 In Orlando, Florida, because Mother didn9t like the doctors and the hospital in .inter Haven, which is where I really had my roots and grew up. Q: (hen) KINNEF1 June 2I, 12II. Q: You sound like a war baby. KINNEF1 Very much so. June 2I was a big day for the Smith family, but my father was not there because he was in Belgium (Battle of the Bulge, and later Cologne, ermany in .orld .ar II. At least that9s what his letters suggest. The story is that my mother caused problems at the hospital by not filling out a name because she was suppose too name me 5 5 as she was55 after my great5grandfather .illiam F. Eger, known to all as Billie. Thank Heavens, she opted for Carole Stephanie Smith. My father9s name was Charles Carroll Smith, so there would have been a feminized Carole Smith, in case he didn9t come back. Fortunately, he returned and I was allowed to become C. Stephanie Smith. Q: All ri ht, well let's take the family. Let's go on your father's side first, the Smith side. (here do they come from) (hat do you know about them) KINNEF1 They are of primarily French and English origins and are what give me the right to say I am a 1Eth generation American, depending on how you count it. Having started out in the Mid5Atlantic region well before the American Revolution, they came down from the area around Columbia, South Carolina, to Jefferson County and a little 8 little town in North Florida called
