Tyson-Chew gained her Bachelor of Music (honours) in composition from the University of Sydney, and she has also completed a Master's Degree (Harry Warren scholarship) in scoring for motion pictures and television at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Her first feature film score for Richard Franklin's Hotel Sorrento, released in 1995, earned her an Australian Film Institute nomination for Best Original Score and was awarded Best Music from the Film Critic's Circle of Australia. She also received the award for Best Original Score for a Feature Film from the Australian Guild of Screen Composers. Tyson-Chew's other film credits include Mr Accident, Under the Lighthouse Dancing, Fern Gully 2 - The Magical Rescue, Brilliant Lies, Visitors, Anacondas, Santa's Apprentice and the 2008 horror film Dying Breed, a score that incorporates layers of electronic music sound design, metamorphosed musical instruments and mutated percussion, combined with modern orchestral techniques. Her television work includes Two Twisted, which won her the 2007 APRA/AGSC Award for Best Music for a TV Series, Halifax F.P, Evil Never Dies and The Lost.
