RELAX YOUR OWN WAY 1221 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach, CA 92663 • BalboaBayClub.com • 949.630.4120 We are very pleased to welcome you to the Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival, a Balboa Yacht Club event. is Festival honors these wooden-boat works of art and salutes their owners who with great devotion, pride and love, maintain these boats in excellent condition so that we can share them with you today. What makes this event so unique is that every boat comes with a story. In some cases these boats are older than us and have lived either a dour or an incredible and abundant life traveling the world’s waterways and oceans with titans of industry or government on their decks. In some cases, a boat might hav e been given up as junk by one owner only to be seen and recreated as a vision of beauty, excitement and passion by another owner. In some cases, the boat has never le one family and is passed down by generations to love use and cherish. In all cases every wooden boat at this event demands meticulousness and hard work. at is what you will see today. But I recommend you go beyond what you see and ask the owner about the boat’s story, and you just might see her come to life. I’ve been involved with this Wooden Boat Festival for four years now. is year, along with Co-Chairman Patrick McCormack, I’m honored to have helped build this event on Ralph Rodheim’s vision to what has now become a three-day concours d’elegance all about wooden boats. Partnered with other Newport Harbor stakeholders and supported by the City of Newport Beach, plus generous sponsors and 120 tireless volunteers, this is now a true community event. is year I will pass on the baton that Ralph passed to me to the capable hands of Patrick McCormack. I am humbled by the experience and grateful for our community and your support. Enjoy the Festival!! David LaMontagne Chairman 1801 BAYSIDE DRIVE, CORONA DEL MAR, CA 92625 3 2017 NEWPORT BEACH WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL Dear Festival Visitors, On behalf of our yacht club members, welcome to Balboa Yacht Club and our 4th Annual Wooden Boat Festival. Founded in 1922 as the Southland Sailing Club, then established as the Balboa Yacht Club (BYC) in 1926, BYC had its rst proper Clubhouse just across the way on Little Balboa Island. Today BYC is a thoroughly modern yacht club with a rich heritage: a community of 800 members and their families who love being on the water as racers, cruisers, anglers, rowers and paddlers. In short, we are a community of dedicated friends sharing a passion for excellence in yachting. Our annual Wooden Boat Festival is one of the many ways in which we express and celebrate that passion. e life of our Club comes from our members’ creativity and willingness to volunteer. ere is no better example of this than our member and friend, the late Ralph Rodheim. Ralph rst envisioned the Wooden Boat Festival as a Concours d’Elegance, showcasing the art and cra smanship of wooden boat building of a largely bygone era. We believe that in just four years, we achieved Ralph’s vision for the Festival as it has become one of our Club’s signature events and has formed yet another BYC tradition. We are so grateful for the support the Wooden Boat Festival receives from the City of Newport Beach, the community at large and our generous sponsors. Right from the start, the Festival was widely recognized for its signi cance in honoring the heritage of boating, timeless cra smanship, quality restoration and preservation. anks to our supporters, we can provide you the opportunity to be right here on Newport Harbor, enjoying the views and activities that this great harbor and event o er. Again, welcome to BYC and thank you for being a part of the Festival. We hope you enjoy the experience and maybe meet a new friend or two to share the lure of the sea and appreciate beautiful boats.
