CHARLEMONT HOUSE: Charlemont House was built in 1765 by James Caulfield (4th Viscount Charlemont). Two famous architects William Chambers and James Gandon designed the house. James wanted to build a townhouse that was a centre piece for Rutland Square, as it was known then, now it is called Parnell Square. Outside was a special area for horse drawn carriages to come off the road so that visitors could disembark right in front of the main entrance.
