He was born in Garnett, Kansas, and raised on the Linn County family farm where his mother and father still live. At Prairie View High School, Sam was elected state president of Future Farmers of America. His interest in public service continued as he attended Kansas State University. During his senior year at KSU, Sam served as student body president. After graduation, Sam decided to attend law school at the University of Kansas where he was his class president before completing his law degree in 1982. In 1986, Sam became the state’s youngest Secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture. During his stint as Ag Secretary, he also served as a White House Fellow in the first Bush Administration. At the age of 38, he was elected to represent the 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1996, he was elected to complete the term of U.S. Senator Bob Dole, followed by two more terms of his own. As governor, he is focused on getting the state’s economy growing again through improved regulations, controlled spending, and lower tax rates. Governor Brownback is working with Kansas business and community leaders from across the state as well as current and former state legislators to craft policy solutions. PAT GEORGE • Secretary of Commerce Pat George represented the 119th House District in the Kansas House of Representatives for eight years. A true Kansas entrepreneur, he has spent more than 25 years starting and building numerous successful ventures in Southwest Kansas. His business experiences range from his family’s automobile dealership to real estate developments to professional sports. George has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Benedictine College in addition to attending General Motors School of Automotive Management. SUNNY ACKERMAN • Manpower Sunny Ackerman serves as Vice President and General Manager of Manpower’s Mountain Central Division. In this role, she leads all aspects of the company’s commercial staffing business, including more than 80 branches in 16 states, including Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming. Sunny also serves as Vice President and General Manager of Manpower’s US Metro Market Division. She oversees all aspects of commercial staffing business for the 10 largest markets in the US; New York, Boston, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Denver and Los Angeles. She is responsible for strategy development and implementation; employee selection, development and retention; sales and service execution; and client satisfaction and retention. Ackerman also leads Manpower’s North America Permanent Placement Solutions practice, leading the company’s branch network in the creation and delivery of innovative permanent placement solutions and project-based opportunities in the permanent placement sector. Active in her community, Ackerman serves as an advocate for the role of women in business and is a true ambassador for equality in the workplace. Presently, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Bean Project, an organization that strives to break the cycle of chronic unemployment and poverty by helping women discover their talents and develop skills by offering job readiness training opportunities. She is involved in the Economic Development Board in the Metro Denver Market and the Women’s Vision Foundation, dedicated to the advancement and development of professional women. In addition, she serves on the WiseWomen Council of the Women’s Vision Foundation, a prestigious leadership forum for top corporate executive women. She is a member of the Executive Leadership Team for America’s Heart Associate “Go Red for Women” campaign and had been selected as the Vice-Chair for the 2011 “Go Red for Women” luncheon. Sunny was recently named Denver’s “Forty Under 40,” featuring a diverse group of young, dynamic business leaders whose efforts in the office and in the community are shaping the future of the Denver area. Sunny was also recently a finalist in the “Women of the Year” award nominated by Women’s Vision Foundation and honors a corporate woman for positive, enlightened, and exemplary leadership at her company and within the community. Originally a native of South Texas, Ackerman graduated with honors from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s Degree. She has been a speaker at the prestigious Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, Arizona, discussing topics on global and local employment trends impacting the current workforce. KENNETH M. SMITH • Jobs for America’s Graduates, Inc. Mr. Kenneth M. Smith, has been President and CEO of Jobs for America’s Graduates, Inc., (JAG) since its inception in 1979.
