Bushnell was widely known, not only as a persevering collector of rare and quaint books, but also as a diligent student of American history ; whose thorough knowledge of those minutiae which escape the notice of all but the painstaking specialist had been proved by his original essays and scholarly annotations to various books. To the happy com- bination of both of these characteristics is due the formation of a collection, not only exceedingly rich in the original authorities for American history, but including many of those rarities and curi- osities which attract the bibliomaniacal collector. It is distinctively a Library of Americana. A number of the old English classics, many works on oratory and composition, translations of Greek and Latin authors, works on the care of birds and other special topics, with a few black-letter volumes, comprise most of the miscellaneous portion of the hbrary. While the collection covers the whole range of the history of America, from its discovery to the Rebellion, certain periods and topics are more fully represented than others. Prominent among these are the whole period.of the Revolutionary War, the wars with his- the Indians and the War of 1812 ; while on the early naval tory of the United States the collection is almost exhaustive. Prominent among the special subjects upon which the collec- tion is very full, are the history of New York City,4he Andr6 and Arnold episode, the Jersey Prison Ship and its victims, the Tammany Society, Indian Captivities and Massacres, Hamilton and Burr, Washington, &c., including under each head many of the rarest works on the subject. The collection of Trials, both military and civil, is, for its size, of great interest. The very large number of Local Histories and of Historical Addresses merit especial attention, including as they do, many of the scarcest works of this class. Many Genealogies and most of the valuable Reprints of rare Americana which have been issued in limited editions during the last twenty years will be found in the library. A most noticeable feature of the collection is the great num- ber of books illustrated with extra plates by Mr. Bushnell. Such plates are inlaid, when necessary, in the best manner. Numerous other books, although many of them are ready for the binder's hands, have the extra plates merely laid Within the covers, and are so noted. The books, as a collection, are in excellent order, internally and externally. Care has been taken to mention the few defects that have been found. The great majority of the books in half calf and half morocco were bound by Mr. Bushnell's directions and their bindings have been preserved uninjured and fresh. The large collection of Portraits and Engravings were selected almost entirely with a view to illustrating American history. Among them will be found some mezzotints and other engrav- ings of great rarity. The collection of Autographs is of the same character. A glance over the names of the writers will sufficiently indicate the number of rare and valuable letters which it contains. Many other autograph letters will be found in- serted in various books throughout the catalogue. Among the Historic Relics, &c., will be found a number of articles deserving the collector's notice. It is unnecessary to do more than to^call attention to the very peculiar interest attached to the large number of original Wood Blocks engraved by Dr. Anderson—the American Bewick. 1; CATALOGUE. fd7 / I \ BBOT, A.
