The presiding officer, Soror Manessa Wilson, and the secretary, Soror Miriam Blankenship, were present. The minutes of the February 2, 2019 meeting were approved with no corrections. The meeting was called to order by Soror Manessa Wilson, Basileus at 9:30 am. The meditation was given by Soror Raven Moore, Chaplain. The agenda was adopted with the following corrections and additions: 1. Soror Karla Barnes will give the Scholarship announcement. 2. The Pillowcase Project Report will be read by Soror Michelle Sallie Lee. A quorum was established. (X) Yes ( ) No. There are 361 sorors on roll with 234 members present and 2 visiting sorors . See attached attendance list. REPORTS OF OFFICERS Basileus: Summary of report filed as read: (C) Soror Manessa Wilson • Thank you for your cooperation in adjusting the February chapter meeting time to accommodate the Joint Founders’ Day Luncheon. Sorors Eunice Rogers, Patricia Staton, Venita Wesley, and Michelle Harris served in different capacitates at the luncheon, and therefore could not attend chapter meeting; they will receive credit for the February 2 chapter meeting. • Soror Tracey Morant Adams is currently attending Spring Directorate meeting and cannot be in attendance with us today; she will receive credit for today’s meeting. • The Founders’ Day Committee presented a program today at 8:30 am. Rededication followed at 9:00 am. Regional delegate training will take place immediately following the chapter meeting. • The 87th South Eastern Regional Conference will be held in Mobile, AL from March 7 - March 10. Please note the weekly announcements for information regarding the chapter dinner, service project, and other pertinent information. • Regular registration for AKA Day at the Capitol is now open. The cost is $45 through April 9. • Registration is now open for the 2019 Leadership Seminar, which will be held in Nashville, TN from June 26 - June 30. Registration is $295 through March 31, after which the cost will be $325 through April 15. • All end of year reports should have already been submitted. If you have any EOY books, please submit them to Standards as soon as possible. • All committee chairs please remember to provide ample meeting notice and an agenda to your committee members when scheduling a meeting. Also, provide two signed copies of your report when giving a report at executive board and chapter meeting. • A Philacter Ad Hoc Committee has been established. Soror Felicia Jolly will chair the committee. Committee members are Sorors Kiyana Bell, Veronica Ellison, Lori Harris, Angela Kirkwood, Michelle Sallie Lee, Elaine Mosley, Danielle Ridgeway, and Tareya Witt. • It is my recommendation that the chapter implement one additional ad hoc committee: o Spiritual Oversight Committee: this committee will operate in compliance with the sorority’s International Spiritual Oversight Committee by providing assistance as needed to the chapter and Basileus. This committee would be chaired by our chapter’s Chaplain and would provide services such as an individual members’ prayer needs, as well as a monthly chapter prayer call. o Taken up in Executive Board report (NO Action Required) Anti-Basileus/Program: Summary of report filed as read: (C) Soror Cynthia Todd • Target 1: HBCU for Life (TaShonda Lewis Taylor: chair and Rae-Ann Spears: co-chair) o The committee supported HBCUs by attending the Miles vs. Tuskegee basketball game on Saturday, February 9. o All sorors are encouraged to donate $35 annually to the HBCU endowment, per our Supreme Basileus. As of February 19, the chapter has donated $155.05. o Please report any HBCU donations to Soror TaShonda Lewis Taylor. • #CAP (College Admissions Process) (Margie Curry and Miriam Blankenship: co-chairs) o The committee hosted additional FAFSA workshops at Carver High School on February 21 and February 25. The next FAFSA workshop will be held on March 7 from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm at Carver High School. • Target 2: Women’s Healthcare & Wellness (Jerri Haslem: chair and Jamie Bell: co-chair) o The Pink Goes Red in support of Heart Health Awareness was held on February1 at Spare Time Bowling. • Care for the Caregivers (Moriea Lewis and Bettie Cogman: co-chairs) o The committee participated in a birthday celebration for the attendees at the McCoy Adult Daycare Center on February 19. o The next committee meeting will be held on March 12 at the Southside Police Precinct at 5:30 pm. • Target 3: Building Your Economic Legacy (Jan Williams, Selena Rogers Dickerson, and Maria Flournoy: co-chairs) o Sorors Manessa Wilson and Cynthia Todd represented the chapter at the 15th Annual A. G. Gaston Conference and Sponsors Reception on February 12. o The next committee meeting will be held at SARCOR on February 28 at 5:30 pm. • Target 4: The Arts! (Debborah Barnes: chair, Casi Ferguson and LaToya Jones: co-chairs) o March is Women’s History Month. The Arts! Committee will spotlight UEO sorors that have made significant contributions in the local community in the areas of dance, sculpture, painting, literature, music, and performing arts. • Target 5: Global Impact (Sakeena Smith: chair and Kimberly Bishop: co-chair) o The committee partnered with the Literacy Council of Central Alabama on their ESOL Family Literacy Program on February 5 at CJ Donald Elementary School. o The committee will be collecting new or gently worn women’s, men’s, and children’s shoes to donate to Soles 4 Souls. In addition, the committee will also collect women’s, men’s, and children’s prescription eyeglasses and readers to donate to Lions Club International. For the March chapter meeting, sorors with the last names A - F are encouraged to bring donations. • Pillowcase Project (Wanda Jackson: chair) o The committee held a “Sew and Chew” on February 9 at New Pilgrim Towers and a “Sew on the Road” on February 23. o The next sewing event will be held on March 16. o Please be reminded of the 20 dress quota that each committee is challenged to contribute to the Pillowcase Project effort. • Collaborations Committee (Veronica Ellison: chair and Sharon McGrue and Wendy Hicks: co-chairs) o The committee sponsored a free Mardi Gras Social for residents of the W. Clyde Williams Terrace Facility on February 22. • Scholarship Committee (Jamesel Lewis: chair and Corvetta Vann and Joy Thompson Smith: co-chairs) o UEO and the Valley Pearls Service Foundation will sponsor a Scholarship Workshop on March 3 at Miles College. Students are encouraged to attend to learn interviewing tips, dressing for success, applying for Financial Aid, college application process, and much more. • Joint Founders’ Day Project o Chapter sorors participated in the Joint Founders’ Day Observance service activities on February 16 in partnership with Project Homeless Connect and Hands On Birmingham. • The 2019 UEO Program Book is available for viewing in the Weekly Announcements. • The Arts! Committee gave a presentation: o Soror Glenda Brown Wade read the poem “Black Rage”, an insert taken from a play Justifiable Force written by Soror Erika Wade. o Soror Doris Bentley sang “Trouble of the World” by Mahalia Jackson.
