Mortimer Rare Book Room Smith College Northampton, Massachusetts 7 Oriole Horch Farb Feshbach Papers OTHER COLLECTIONS Mortimer Rare Book Room Smith College Northampton, Massachusetts 8 Oriole Horch Farb Feshbach Papers SCOPE AND CONTENTS The Oriole Horch Farb Feshbach Papers consist of 35 linear ft. and The papers are arranged in twenty-three series: I. PERSONAL; EDUCATION, FAMILY AND TRAVEL (1931-2016) This series, 1931-2016 (with gaps), combines OHFF’s early personal life, her schooling through graduate work, materials related to her internships and work at the Museum of Moderns Art and her travels. Materials include early photographs, letters, sketchbooks and notebooks and items documenting all phases of her education. There is also a folder of OHFF’s recollections and thoughts about her childhood, family life, education, artwork and influences on her life and art. II. YEARLY FILES A series of professional materials relating to OHFF’s career as an artist, her artwork, her artist’s books, exhibitions, writings by OHFF and by others about her work, incoming and outgoing correspondence with colleagues and friends and associates; gift documentation and some research and reference material related to models, and OHFF’s artwork and creative material. Documentation of exhibitions includes lists, price lists, artist statements, publicity, catalogues, guest books and more. Photographs include shots of OHFF at work, of exhibitions and book events, OHFF with friend and miscellaneous images. III. PROFESSIONAL A small series of material that OHFF culled from her Yearly Files because she felt they needed more direct access. The files include documentation of her professional activities and her work as an artist and some personal material that touches on her artwork. There is a separate section for OHFF’s work as director of the Master Institute and Curator of the Riverside Museum (in New York City) in the 1960s to 1971. IV. TEACHING AND TEACHING TOOLS Documents OHFF’s teaching positions at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (Lecturer, 1975-1981, 2001) and at Amherst College (Visiting Professor of Fine Arts, 1977-1978) as well as an instructor for Continuing Education and Elderhostel. It includes contracts, syllabi, roll books, teaching notes, student exhibition information, slides, sketches and tools that chronicle her methods of teaching and student evaluations. V. CORRESPONDENCE This small series, 1965-2015 (with gaps), contains OHFF’s correspondence with colleagues, friends, associates and subjects of her artwork. It is arranged alphabetically by the last name of the writer. Highlights include early (1967-1975) correspondence with photographer Cornell Capa about the creation of the International Center for Photography and numerous letters from poet Stanley Kunitz, who wrote the “Foreword” to OHFF’s book Illuminations. Some of it culled by OHFF from her Yearly Files because she felt the writers need more direct access. Mortimer Rare Book Room Smith College Northampton, Massachusetts 9 Oriole Horch Farb Feshbach Papers VI. POETS Poets, 1976-2000s, is organized alphabetically by the last name of the poet. It contains copies of poems, portraits of poets, biographical and related research material, photographs and event and publicity materials, publishers’ information and organizations. These files include anything OHFF could use to make connections between the poems and her artwork. VII. ARTISTS Artists, 1969-2015, contains materials about women artists who were active in the feminist art world, who influenced OHFF’s work or for whom OHFF provide opportunities when she was Director of the Riverside Museum. OHFF worked together with several of the artists; some she met at her M.F.A. program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in the 1970s. Others she knew from her work at the Riverside Museum in the 1960s. OHFF stayed in touch with many of the artists over the years, collecting information about their artwork and maintaining ongoing correspondence. In 1969 she commissioned artist Audrey Flack to paint a portrait of her family (OHFF, first husband Peter Farb, and sons Mark and Daniel). Documentation of that portrait is included. OHFF segregated material relating to these artists because of their significance in her curatorial and artwork. VIII. SCRAPBOOKS Scrapbooks, 1962 to date, chronicle the professional activities, artwork and life of Oriole Horch Farb Feshbach. This series also includes some documentation of her first husband, writer and photographer Peter Farb.It contain correspondence, press releases, photographs, publicity, correspondence (originals and photocopies), auction contributions, artwork for Parnassus and The Massachusetts Review, documentation of exhibitions and public appearances, news stories and articles, catalogues related to OHFF work, or other artists who she supported in their careers.This series can be used to create a framework for establishing a timeline of OHFF’s life and activity, supplements by every other series, especially Yearly Files. IX. BIBLIOGRAPHY/PRINTED MATERIAL Bibliography/Printed Material, 1960-2015, contains a selection of materials written by or about OHFF and her work. It is divided into 10 sections, each arranged chronologically. It includes the books she created, catalogues of exhibitions she curated, catalogues for exhibitions of her own artwork and any reviews and articles of her work and life as an artist.
