Organised by national charity Alcohol Concern, the Dry January campaign aims to highlight the benefits of cutting down on drink by challenging people to cut out alcohol for 31 days. The charity is encouraging people to sign up for the 2018 challenge. Of those who signed up and participated this year, 79% saved money, 62% reported that they had better sleep and more energy and 49% lost weight. Coming into its 6th year, since its launch in 2012, Dry January has rapidly grown in popularity and is becoming a firm fixture of the national calendar. For more information about Dry January 2018 and to sign up visit here The 2017 Drug Strategy The national 2017 Drug Strategy was published in July 2017 with the stated aim to: ‘Reduce all illicit and other harmful drug use and increase the rate of individuals recovering from their dependence’. The strategy sets out the Government’s plans across four main themes: Reducing Demand: Action to prevent the onset of drug use through building confidence in young people, targeted education and prevention approaches to young people most at risk, building resilience in communities and engagement with families Restricting Supply: Developing a smarter approach to restricting the supply of drugs through tackling criminal activity including tackling domestic cannabis production, tackling drugs, gangs and related exploitation. A further key objective is tackling the supply of drugs over the internet Building Recovery: Raising ambitions for full recovery by improving treatment to meet needs and build services that support people for a life free from drugs and alcohol. Global Action: Shaping international policy, leading on best practice and innovation at the international level Implementation of the strategy will be supported by new measures to promote and enhance recovery outcomes. At a national level, a new board will be established, chaired by the Home Secretary and supported by a newly created national recovery champion. In Shropshire, the DAAT currently support the delivery of the strategy through a number of work streams and areas. Page 3 Recover! We Need Your Feedback! Page 4 Issue 7 Recent DAAT Events Roundup Recent months have seen the DAAT, in partnership with the Shropshire Recovery Network, hold two public events. The Building & Celebrating Recovery Event was held on the 15th September as part of International Recovery Month. The aim of the event was to celebrate the achievements of the Shropshire Recovery Community and explore opportunities for future developments. The day included a number of informative presentations from mutual aid services such as Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon and Public Health England. Workshops also took place where delegates discussed topics such as ‘Recovery in Shropshire—what works well and not so well’ and ‘Where do we want to be in 12 months time’ The outcomes from these workshops will be taken forward in future planning for the DAAT. The centre piece for the day was the inaugural Shropshire Recovery Awards which aimed to recognise and celebrate the huge achievements of people in recovery and the important role of those services and individuals who offer support. Six awards, voted for by both service users and those employed in treatment services were presented by Jane MacKenzie, Mayor of Shrewsbury and Cllr Lee Chapman, Portfolio Holder for Health and Adult Social Care. Awards included ‘Inspiring Recovery Journey’, ‘Outstanding Recovery Worker’ and ‘Unsung Hero’. The evaluation of the event was hugely positive with delegates feeling that the agenda was interesting, informative and inspiring. The Families & Concerned Others Event was held on the 16th November was aimed at anyone living in Shropshire who are affected by someone else’s drug or alcohol use. People who attended had the opportunity to speak to a range of services to find out more about available support as well as feedback their experiences as a carer in order to help identify gaps in services. The event saw presentations from a range of services including Al-Anon, hugely powerful personal stories and workshops exploring topics such as the support needed for carers and potential barriers to accessing support. Delegates who attended the event were very positive stating that it was thought provoking and helpful. This event was very much a starting point for engaging with those affected by others drug and alcohol use. We particularly want to learn from the experiences of others in order to develop services which address any potential barriers or gaps. The DAAT are currently looking at developing and holding future events in 2018. Page 5 Recover! Children & Young People Now Awards 2017 In November, The DAAT were part of team from Shropshire who successfully won The Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education Award at the Children & Young People Now Awards 2017.
