MacKenzie was a long-time Captiva resident, dividing her time between the island, Lake Forest, Illinois and the Red Rock Ranch near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She was passionate in preserving our envi­ ronment. Among her board commitments were an early member of Lake Forest Open Lands, where she later served as its president, the Illinois and Wyoming Nature Conservancy Boards, the National Parks and Conservation Board and Lake Forest Garden Club. MacKenzie also was active in her church, the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, was a trustee of the Ethel Walker School, located in Simsbury, Connecticut, and was an avid golfer. Debby MacKenzie “Her contributions to the Captiva Island Historical Society were enormous,” said Jim Pigott, president of CIHS. “Debby and her husband, David, were in our first oral history film, and she provided insights and support at our board meeting just weeks before she died.” Debby MacKenzie died on May 11. She is survived by her husband, David, four children and 12 grandchildren. The CIHS is a 501(3)c organization.
