ARTICLE I: STATEMENT OF AFFILIATION Section 1: This organization is a chartered collegiate chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. under the name, style and title of Lambda Upsilon Chapter Number Two Hundred and Fifty (250). Section 2: A copy of the Bylaws of Lambda Upsilon shall be filed in the Office of Student Life & Leadership at California State University, Fullerton every year during registration or within thirty (30) days after substantive change or amendments. ARTICLE II: PURPOSE The purpose of this organization is: • To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principals of Love, Honor, and Truth; • To foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart, and character; and, • To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity. In an effort to lessen the disparity between fraternity ideals and individual behavior and to personalize these values in the daily undergraduate experience, the following basic expectations of Sigma Nu Fraternity membership have been established: 1. I will know and understand the ideals expressed in my fraternity ritual and will strive to incorporate them in my daily life. 2. I will strive for academic achievement and practice academic integrity. 3. I will respect the dignity of all persons; therefore, I will not physically, mentally, psychologically or sexually abuse or haze any human being. 4. I will protect the health and safety of all human beings. 5. I will respect my property and the property of others; therefore, I will neither abuse nor tolerate the abuse of property. 6. I will meet my financial obligations in a timely manner. 7. I will neither use nor support the use of illegal drugs; I will neither misuse nor support the misuse of alcohol. 8. I acknowledge that a clean and attractive environment is essential to both physical and mental health; therefore, I will do all in my power to see that the chapter property is properly cleaned and maintained. 9. I will challenge my members to abide by these fraternal expectations and confront those who violate them. This organization accepts the Nine Basic Expectations of Membership as its expectations for Chapter membership. ARTICLE III: DEFINITIONS Section 1: ACTIVE BROTHER. Any student of California State University, Fullerton who has been initiated into the Lambda Upsilon Chapter, and has neither resigned nor been expelled. Section 2: ALUMNI BROTHER. Alumni Status is granted to Brothers who have graduated from California State University, Fullerton. Temporary Alumni Status is granted to Brothers who transferred to another school to complete their Bachelor’s Degree. Section 3: CANDIDATE. A prospective member who has been elected to connect himself with the Fraternity and who has accepted the invitation of the Lambda Upsilon Chapter at the formal Candidate Ceremony. Section 4: CANDIDATE PROGRAM. A ten (10) week process held during the academic semester and used for the education and evaluation of a candidate of the Lambda Upsilon Chapter. Section 5: QUORUM. Two-thirds of the active Chapter. In extreme circumstances, telepresent attendance (including, but not limited to Skype and Face Time) is included in this count only with consent of the Commander. Section 6: QUORUM VOTE. A majority vote by roll call when Quorum is present. Section 7: PROPER NOTICE. An announcement at Chapter convocations at least one week in advance of an event or Quorum Vote. Section 8: GOOD STANDING. An Active Brother that is neither expelled nor on Suspension. Section 9: SUSPENSION. The temporary removal of an Active Brother’s rights and privileges in the Fraternity. A suspended Brother remains a member of the Fraternity, subject to all the responsibilities and obligations to the Fraternity and his Chapter. Section 10: CHAPTER MEETINGS. Defined as Chapter Convocations. Section 11: This organization accepts Robert’s Rules of Order as its Rules of Order. ARTICLE IV: MEMBERSHIP Section 1: This organization has the right to determine both membership and the practice and procedures by which membership is conferred. Section 2: General Member Expectations 2.1 Maintain Academic Standards set See Article IV: Section III 2.2 Maintain 70% attendance of recorded events 2.3 Every Active member succeeding Gamma Beta class must be involved in at least one (1) outside organization. 2.4 Complete 6 hours of community service hours 2.5 Pay dues within one week of the approval of the budget Section 3: Meetings and events shall follow the rules prescribed below: 3.1 ATTENDANCE. Active Brothers shall attend Chapter Meetings, committee meetings, and other Chapter events regularly and timely. 3.2 ATTENDANCE FINES. Any Active brother that is absent from Super meetings (without an excusable reason) will be fined $50. 3.3 DRESS CODE. Attendees of Chapter Meetings and Ritual shall dress formally, unless otherwise decided by the Commander. Casual clothing such as, but not limited to, ball caps, jeans, tank tops, t-shirts, and tennis shoes, are not permitted. 3.4 DISTRACTIONS. At Chapter Meetings and Ritual, eating is not allowed. The use of cell phones, laptops, and other devices is not permitted unless permission is granted by the Commander. 3.5 ATTENDANCE FINES. Any Active Brother who fails to meet 70% of attendance (including Sunday meetings, Super meeting, initiation, candidate pinning, Sigma Nu Philanthropy events, Brotherhood retreats, Brother hood events, Sigma Nu Social Invite, Sigma Nu Social Mixer, Sigma Nu Social meet and greets, and Recruitment events scheduled by Recruitment chair) by the first half (first 8 weeks) of the semester will be fined $50 unless absences are excused by the recorder. Any Active Brother who fails to meet 70% of attendance (including Sunday meetings, Super meeting, initiation, candidate pinning, Sigma Nu Philanthropy events, Brotherhood retreats, Brother hood events, Sigma Nu Social Invite, Sigma Nu Social Mixer, Sigma Nu Social meet and greets, and Recruitment events scheduled by Recruitment chair) by the second half (remaining 8 weeks) of the semester will be fined $50 unless absences are excused by the recorder and Eminent Commander. 3.6 ATTENDANCE EXCUSES. Are listed as work, class, and personal. Work, class, and personal must be approved by Eminent Commander and Recorder. Section 4: 4.1 ACADEMIC STANDARDS: If a brother’s cumulative and semester Grade Point Average is both above a 2.500 GPA, the brother is in good standing. If a brother’s cumulative grade point average is above a 2.500 GPA, but his semester GPA is below a 2.500 GPA, for every .100 GPA below, he must complete one (1) study hour. However, if a brother’s grade point average falls below a 2.000 semester GPA, that brother will be suspended at the start of the following semester until that brother’s SEMESTER grades are brought above academic standard. A bi-weekly update on grades will be presented to the Scholarship Officer once the brother’s grades are brought above academic standard for the remainder of the semester. If a brother’s cumulative grade point average is below a 2.500 GPA, that brother will be suspended starting at the beginning of the following semester until that brother’s SEMESTER grades are brought above academic standard. A bi-weekly update on grades will be presented to the Scholarship Officer once the brother’s grades are brought above academic standard for the remainder of the semester. Brothers that fall below a 2.500 cumulative GPA will be administered an academic coach assigned by the Scholarship Chairman and issued mandatory study hours determined by the Scholarship Chairman. If brother’s cumulative grade point average falls below a 2.200 GPA, that brother will be sent to Trial Court. Active Brothers who fail to meet these academic standards are automatically suspended starting at the beginning of the following semester until said brother’s grades are brought above academic standard of 2.5.
