Explain Stalin’s weapons of totalitarianism. To realize his vision of a perfect Communist State Stalin planned to transform the Soviet Union into a totalitarian state & began by destroying his enemies. He then built a police state to maintain his power & arrested & executed millions of so-called traitors. Stalin turned against members of the Communist Party & launched the Great Purge, a campaign of terror directed at eliminating anyone who threatened his power. Stalin’s government controlled all newspapers, motion pictures, radio, & other sources of information & allowed no creativity that did not conform to the views of the state. The Government & programs had to be glorified & education was controlled from nursery school through universities & they were taught the virtues of the Communist Party. The Government encouraged atheism & aimed to replace religious teachings with the ideals of communism.

16. How did Stalin try to control or persuade the citizens of Russia? Stalin built a police state to maintain his power & used the secret police who used tanks & armored cars to stop riots, monitored phone lines, read mail & placed informers everywhere. He taught students early in school that Communism was right & everything else was wrong so the children grew up being loyal to the government.
