Stalin turned against members of the Communist Party & launched the Great Purge, a campaign of terror directed at eliminating anyone who threatened his power. Stalin’s government controlled all newspapers, motion pictures, radio, & other sources of information & allowed no creativity that did not conform to the views of the state. The Government & programs had to be glorified & education was controlled from nursery school through universities & they were taught the virtues of the Communist Party. The Government encouraged atheism & aimed to replace religious teachings with the ideals of communism.
