1. What Is Benevolent Sexism? Hostile Sexism?

<p> Discussion Questions – DUE MONDAY 2/8/16</p><p>CHAPTER 6</p><p>Answer each question according to the information in the text. Find the evidence that answers each question. DO NOT just copy the information from the text, but re-word it in your OWN words. You also need to provide an interpretation, which includes your personal thoughts and/or ideas, at least one example, and at least one real-life application for each of the questions (concepts) listed below:</p><p>1. What is benevolent sexism? Hostile sexism?</p><p>2. Explain Michael Selmi’s idea of “lingering bias” in terms of women in the workplace. What does he base his conclusions on?</p><p>3. What is the evidence that women do NOT have jobs they “prefer”?</p><p>4. What is homophily? How did this affect Wall Street professionals?</p><p>5. What is social exclusion and how does it affect women in the workplace? Identify the evidence the author uses to illustrate social exclusion.</p><p>6. Discuss the problems women may have with “out-of-office” socializing. Be sure to provide ALL of the evidence that supports this idea.</p><p>7. Why, as Selmi suggests, is sexual harassment NOT about the “erotic charge”?</p><p>8. Discuss what the Athena Factor found regarding sexual harassment experiences. Include how “residents” felt about the sexual harassment that takes place in the surgery field, as well as how the female victims feel.</p><p>9. What are the benefits and downfalls of filing a workplace harassment suit? 10. Explain how equal opportunity laws have reduced workplace harassment. </p>
