Mask Art Project – Lord of the Flies NAME:______DATE:______

“... the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness.”

Directions: Choose a character from Lord of the Flies and create a mask that represents either his shame/self-consciousness or his liberation from it (or possibly—both). If you choose Jack, do NOT simply recreate the mask that he makes for himself in the novel. Option 1: Use unlined paper. Use colored inks, pencils, paints, or markers. Be original and neat. You may use the template provided or create a shape of your own, but the mask must be no larger than 8 ½” x 11”. Mount the mask on construction paper. Option 2: Create a three-dimensional mask using your own materials. **The mask must be no larger than 8 ½” x 11”. Creating a three-dimensional mask will not earn extra points. I am offering this option for those who really, really want to create a 3D mask; however, I honestly prefer Option 1 for the ease of portability and display. Use the back of this paper to plan your mask.

MASK EXCEEDS MEETS DOES NOT MEET EXPECTATIONS EXPECTATIONS EXPECTATIONS RUBRIC Clearly represent character’s Clearly represent Symbols are SYMBOLS shame/self-consciousness character’s shame/self- inappropriate/not related and/or freedom from it; Are well consciousness and/or to character, except by chosen for the character & freedom from it but do perhaps a loose reveal insights beyond those not reveal insights association (“stretch”) discussed often in class beyond those discussed in class Obvious that the creator took Mask is neat & colorful; Mask looks thrown APPEARAN great pride in his/her work; may have one or two together at the last CE design & construction is neat & elements that detract minute; appears that little colorful; a real “wow!” effect from its overall design or planning was appearance done.
