FLECT/FLEX – bend Inflection (noun) – a change in the pitch, tone, or loudness of the voice ex. – The man from New York had an odd inflection when he spoke.</p><p>2. POST – after; behind Postmortem (adj.) – occurring after death ex. – Many of Bukowski’s poems were published postmortem.</p><p>3. MAL – bad Malevolent (adj.) – having or showing intense ill will or hatred ex. – The majority of students have malevolent feelings toward taking vocabulary quizzes. </p><p>4. CATA – down Catalyst (noun) – someone or something that brings about significant change ex. – Rosa Parks’ famous bus ride was a catalyst for the civil rights movement.</p><p>5. PROT/PROTO – first in time; first formed Prototype (noun) – an original model ex. – Prototype cars often fail to make production runs because they are too expensive to build.</p><p>6. ANTE – before; in front of Anterior (adj.) – located before or towards the front ex. – After the accident my car was wedged in the anterior of the building.</p><p>7. ORTH/ORTHO – straight; right; true Orthodox (adj.) – conforming to established rules or traditions ex. – Many orthodox religions refuse to accept modern technologies.</p><p>8. RECT – straight; right Rectify (verb) – to set right or correct ex. – After I broke her cell phone I tried to rectify the situation by buying a new one.</p><p>9. EU – well; good; true Euphemism (noun) – the use of an inoffensive word in place of one that offends ex. – People trying to be politically correct use euphemisms when they speak in public.</p><p>10. DYS – bad; difficult; abnormal; impaired Dysfunctional (adj.) – operating in an abnormal or impaired way ex. – My dad says that our family is dysfunctional whenever we are all together.
