Recognize and use features of narrative and informational text.</p><p>Enduring Understanding: (Purpose for reading) Essential Questions:</p><p>Understand the lives of people and activities Where are the Rocky Mountains? related to the Rocky region. What states have the Rocky Mountains in them?</p><p>Before Reading Vocabulary: Introduce the words and have the Phonics/Mechanics: students fill out the vocabulary chart. When a word ends with y, you drop the y and add ies to make the plural. Rockies, mountain range, national park, ski instructor, ranch hand, park ranger, visitor Rocky, study, story, family, strategy, community, activity, responsibility, opportunity, city, industry, (Purpose of a glossary-see comprehension country, county strategy) Go over these words. Make the flipbooks before the reading group. Cut some cardstock that is 8 ½ by 2 inches. Staple all the base words on the left hand Activate/Build Prior Knowledge: side. Staples the ies on the right hand side so that when it is flipped down it covers the y to make the “Have you ever been camping in the mountains? plural word. What are some activities you and your family participated in?” Talk with the students about Comprehension Strategy: where we live is often like where we work. Look at the pictures in the book. Page 4 has a picture of Summarize important details. a man on a horse. What do you think his role is Text Structure: living in the Rockies? Look at page 13. What do Text Feature: glossary. The glossary in this book you think his role is for visitors in the Rockies?” helps to define people roles and the geographic aspects of area. Teach student that this can be a resource for students as they read and/or after.</p><p>During Reading</p><p>Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records.</p><p>Students will mumble read the text. Teacher taps in to hear individual students read. Take anecdotal/running record notes. Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: After Reading</p><p>Who were some of the people that live in the Rockies? What were their jobs? If you had to pick one job for living in the Rockies, which one would it be and why? </p><p>Summarize each person’s role and turn the summary into “Who am I?” riddles.
