Enduring Understanding: (Purpose for reading) Essential Questions:

Before Reading Vocabulary: Introduce the words and have the Phonics/Mechanics: students fill out the vocabulary chart. When a word ends with y, you drop the y and add ies to make the plural. Rockies, mountain range, national park, ski instructor, ranch hand, park ranger, visitor Rocky, study, story, family, strategy, community, activity, responsibility, opportunity, city, industry, (Purpose of a glossary-see comprehension country, county strategy) Go over these words. Make the flipbooks before the reading group. Cut some cardstock that is 8 ½ by 2 inches. Staple all the base words on the left hand Activate/Build Prior Knowledge: side. Who were some of the people that live in the Rockies? What were their jobs? If you had to pick one job for living in the Rockies, which one would it be and why?

Summarize each person’s role and turn the summary into “Who am I?” riddles. Encourage students to ask Each other the answers to their riddles.
