Smith, Snow, Stewart, Stille, Talley, Taylor, Thompson, Toole, 19 Townsend, Tripp, Trotter, Umphlett, Vaughn, Viers, Walker, Weeks, Whipper, White, Whitmire, 20 Wilkins, Witherspoon and Young 21 Document Path: l:\council\bills\swb\5583mm03.doc 22 23 Introduced in the House on June 4, 2003 24 Adopted by the House on June 4, 2003 25 26 Summary: Reese, Reeves, Rose Biennial Reunion 27 28 29 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 30 31 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 32 6/4/2003 House Introduced and adopted HJ-124 33 34 35 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 36 37 6/4/2003 38 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 RECOGNIZING THE BIENNIAL REUNION OF THE “REESE, 12 REEVES, ROSE” FAMILY IN COLUMBIA IN CELEBRATION 13 AND HONOR OF THEIR ROOTS ESTABLISHED IN THE 14 ARTHURTOWN AND LITTLE CAMDEN AREAS TWO 15 HUNDRED YEARS AGO. 16 17 Whereas, since 1970, more than one hundred members of the 18 “Reese, Reeves, Rose” family have gathered in Columbia every 19 two years to celebrate their history; and 20 21 Whereas, that history began in the 1800’s when the family 22 resettled in the Arthurtown and Little Camden areas on the 23 outskirts of Columbia after leaving the Reese plantation near 24 Sumter; and 25 26 Whereas, they brought with them the skills of cooks, seamstresses, 27 farmers, carpenters, brickmasons, and builders, and those skills 28 were passed down to descendants; and 29 30 Whereas, John Reese, became a master brickmason and along with 31 his brother James Reese, a self-taught carpenter and Jack-of-all 32 skills, built his own brick home over fifty years ago; and 33 34 Whereas, the family home still stands today next to Zion Pilgrim 35 Baptist Church in Arthurtown; and 36 37 Whereas, the family matriarch, Mrs. Amy Parker, wisely invested 38 in real estate in and around Columbia and Newberry, allowing her 39 to provide homes for her sisters, brothers, and cousins and kept the 40 family stable, close, and secure; and 41</p><p>1 [4376] 1 1 Whereas, she and her sister, Mrs. Susan Anderson, are responsible 2 for sending a number of the younger descendants to college when 3 it was not popular for blacks to go to college; and many of those 4 descendants and their children went on to become bankers, 5 teachers, lawyers, firemen, policemen, newscasters, and nurses; 6 and 7 8 Whereas, though a number of descendants still reside in Columbia, 9 the Reese, Reeves, Rose family lives all over the United States 10 now, but will always call Columbia, South Carolina “home”: the 11 place that made them who they are today. Now, therefore, 12 13 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 14 15 That members of the House of Representatives hereby recognize 16 the biennial reunion of the “Reese, Reeves, Rose” family in 17 Columbia, in celebration and honor of their roots established in the 18 Arthurtown and Little Camden areas two hundred years ago. 19 20 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 21 the Reese, Reeves, Rose family. 22 ----XX---- 23</p><p>1 [4376] 2</p>
