The engineer can design the environment and the vehicle, but he/she has little effect on the behavior of the end user. The incorporation of technology in transportation is called Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). ITS is the application of high technology and computer power to current freeway, traffic, and transit systems with the goal of increasing the safety and efficiency of the surface transportation system. The utilization of ITS has the potential to solve future problems in transportation. It is important because it offers major steps forward in improving safety, convenience, and productivity of personal and commercial transportation,

Evaluation / Summary

Students will correctly answer a minimum of 70% of the questions on the lesson assessment to demonstrate mastery of this material.

References/Additional Materials / Extended Learning Opportunities/ Enrichment

Overview of Transportation: Power Point presentation on History of Transportation found at: http://www.transportationoutreach.org/presentations/

Map of Major Transportation Facilities in the United States: This is available at the Bureau of Transportation Statistics website in print publications section (free): http://www.bts.gov/ .
