En quittant le domaine familial, le futur chevalier connait les bases de l’équitation et du combat. Ensuite, valet chez un parent ou chez un suzerain, il apprend l’entretien des armes et le service de son seigneur, tout en continuant son entrainement au combat. Puis, il participe aux tournois et aux batailles et accède à l’état d’écuyer.
