<p> Geography Terms</p><p>Ocean: The whole body of saltwater that covers nearly three fourths of the Earth’s surface.</p><p>Gulf: An extension of the sea partly surrounded by land, larger than a bay.</p><p>Bay: a coastal indentation of the sea or a lake into the land. </p><p>Strait: a stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water, narrower than a channel. </p><p>Sea level: the elevation of oceans and seas, land elevation is measured above or below sea level. </p><p>River: Any stream of freshwater flowing from an upland source into a body of water or another river. </p><p>Cataract: a large, steep waterfall</p><p>Tributary: A river that flows into a larger river.</p><p>Source: A spring, lake or other body of water that is a place where a river begins. </p><p>Mouth: The point where a river empties into another body of water. </p><p>Delta: an area of land formed by deposits at the mouth river. </p><p>Desert: an area of land with little rainfall or vegetation. </p><p>Plateau: A large elevated area of flat land. </p><p>Valley: A long, low area, usually with a river flowing through it and often lying between mountains or hills. </p><p>Plain: A large area of generally flat or gently rolling land. </p><p>Island: A body of land completely surrounded by water. </p><p>Peninsula: A long piece of land surrounded on three sides by water. </p><p>Isthmus: A narrow strip of land that connects tow larger bodies of land. </p><p>Mountain range: A row of connected mountains. </p><p>Floodplain: Plain bordering a river and made of soil deposited during floods. </p>
