As you read you may highlight the article and take notes in the margins. How did the geography of Africa influence the development of its diverse civilizations? 2. What new pictures of Kush and Axum are emerging from recent scholarship? How would you describe each of these civilizations? 3. How is climate change an important factor in understanding early African cultures? 4. How did the Saharan trade networks operate? 5. What were the distinctive characteristics of East Africa? 6. How and when did migration influence southern Africa? 7.
