EARLY CIVILIZATIONS IN AFRICA and ISLAM

We will be reading the article, “Early Civilizations in Africa,” in several sections. As you read you may highlight the article and take notes in the margins. You MUST also create a list of KEY TERMS for each section; organize your KEY TERMS under the three sections of the packet, per the homework below.

As you read the opening of the article , consider the following questions:

1. How did the geography of Africa influence the development of its diverse civilizations? 2. What new pictures of Kush and Axum are emerging from recent scholarship? How would you describe each of these civilizations? 3. How is climate change an important factor in understanding early African cultures? 4. How did the Saharan trade networks operate? 5. What were the distinctive characteristics of East Africa? 6. How and when did migration influence southern Africa? 7. Use the chronology on page 222 to establish some parallels with other cultures we have studied?
