<p>SGRAFFITO SLAB BOX SYMOBLIC REPRESENTATION </p><p>Lesson Overview Students will construct a slab box that depicts a symbolic representation of them. </p><p>Learning Targets Utilize and apply basic clay building techniques. Understand and apply sgraffito as an art form. Identify the seven stages of clay.</p><p>Essential Question How can clay be used as a non-functional art form?</p><p>Higher Order Thinking Questions What images does artist, Todd Barricklow, use in his own ceramic works? What is the difference between functional and non-functional art? What are the differences between a craftsman and an artist?</p><p>Vocabulary Sgraffito: The process of removing a surface material to reveal a sub surface. Slab: The use of flat pieces of clay to construct a form. Score: Method of scratching the surface of clay in preparation of joining two pieces. Slip: A saturated form of clay that is used on a scored surface to cement two pieces together. Functional Art: Art that is created with some artistic design elements but can serve a purpose within daily life. Non-functional Art: Art that is created with many artistic design elements but cannot serve a purpose within daily life. This type of art is usually hung or placed in a space for visual appreciation. Craft: Expert handiwork, or done by hand. Most crafts are functional works. They are creations that satisfy everyday needs.
