<p> Pre-AP English II Outside Reading Assignment</p><p>First Semester</p><p>Book Requirement: Non-fiction with a 200 page minimum and no movie version. Teacher must approve book by Wednesday, September 10, 2014.</p><p>Suggestions: Biographies & autobiographies, memoirs, historical documentaries, etc. Go beyond the first search for a topic on Amazon, delve into the obscure. Find a book on someone that is not so famous but his/her life story is interesting. Look for the books on topics that interest you but that you are not necessarily already an expert on the content. </p><p>The book should be inspiring, enlightening, moving, shocking, etc. How to Take 10 Strokes off your Golf Game or ACT for Dummies would NOT be the kind of non-fiction book that will have significant “moments.”</p><p>Assignment:</p><p>I. Presentation: (100 points) Due: Wednesday, October 22, 2014 Prepare an advertisement for your book. The purpose of your presentation will be to encourage others to read your novel. Your presentation must be a minimum of 5 minutes. You MUST have a visual to enhance your presentation. Some ideas include but are not limited to: movie poster or trailer, t-shirt design, soundtrack, magazine ad, commercial, etc. Please tell me in advance what you will need for your presentation. Avoid PowerPoint presentations. </p><p>Rubric: Presentation/Visual</p><p>______/ 50 A visual is provided in order to advertise the book in a unique way. Displays creativity, captures the essence of the book, inspires others to read the book, etc. Demonstrates effort and careful consideration. </p><p>______/ 50 Presentation to the class is creative and well-planned. Explanation of the book is clear and shows evidence that the book has been read and analyzed. Pays attention to details and important aspects of the novel (i.e. “big moments” that significantly impact the plot). (30 points)</p><p>III. Part you enjoyed the most (20 points) Explain in detail!</p><p>IV. Lesson the reader learns from this person’s life story (20 points) Explain in detail!</p><p>V. Recommendation/Review (10 points)</p><p>Rubric : Reader Response and Analysis: 100 Points</p><p>______/ 5 The basic information for the book is provided: title, author, number of pages, and genre.</p><p>______/ 30 Plot summary is provided for the book that is at least three paragraphs in length and analyzes one or more of the following elements in relation to the novel’s literary content: conflict, theme, symbolism, foreshadowing, flashback, dialect, irony, allusion, and/or the protagonist’s character development throughout the novel.</p><p>______/ 20 The part of the book that the student enjoyed the most is explained in detail in at least one paragraph.</p><p>______/ 20 The lesson the student learned from the person’s life story is explained in detail in at least one paragraph.</p><p>______/ 10 The student provides a review of the book that includes any criticisms or recommendations in at least one paragraph.</p><p>______/ 5 The student’s assignment is typed in the correct outline format in no larger than 12 point font, Times New Roman.</p><p>______10 The student uses correct sentence structure, paragraph structure, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation throughout the assignment.
