Biology Pre-Learning Check s2

Chapter 8: Photosynthesis

For this unit, we will be studying how plant cells (and some Protists) get their own energy through photosynthesis. We will focus on the two stages of photosynthesis (light dependent reactions and light independent reactions), the other names by which they are know (light reactions, dark reactions, Calvin Cycle). Specifically we’ll look at where inside the chloroplast they take place, the materials they start with, the useful products that they make and the waste products that are left over. At the end of the unit, a mixed format (multiple choice, diagram, short answer) test is given. We will use this information in the next chapter to compare and contrast how cells use their energy in a process called cell respiration.

Pages to read: 226 – 241 Cards due: Wednesday, Oct. 7 Vocab/Bookquiz on: Friday, Oct 9.

Chapter 8: Photosynthesis Vocab + if you’re an expert (can explain to someone else)  if you’ve heard of it (and know a little) 0 if you’ve never heard of it

_____ photosynthesis ______autotroph ______heterotroph ______light dependent _____ chloroplast _____ reactions ______thylakoid ______stroma ______chlorophyll ______ATP ______electron transport _____ ADP _____ chain ______NADPH ______NADP+ ______Calvin Cycle ______light independent _____ carbohydrate _____ reactions ______glucose _____ Skills/ Learning Targets _____ Differentiate between autotrophs and heterotrophs and give examples of each _____ Explain why almost all organisms depend on photosynthesis _____ Explain how organisms besides plants benefit from photosynthesis _____ Summarize the events of the light dependent reactions and light independent reactions, including  the reactants,  main products  waste products  the organelle and parts involved _____ Diagram where different reactants, products and processes of photosynthesis take place _____ Identify/explain the formula for photosynthesis _____ Explain how environmental factors affect the rate of photosynthesis
