Marx and Engels in the Revolution of 1848.</p><p>André Jardin, Tocqueville: A Biography, trans. by Lydia Davis with Robert Hememway (1988). A reliable assessment of Tocqueville’s career, and a valuable source on this key liberal.</p><p>Warren Lerner, A History of Socialism and Communism in Modern Times: Theorists, Activists, and Humanists (1982). A very useful modern survey.</p><p>George Lichtheim, Marxism: An Historical and Critical Study (1982). A thoughtful analysis of Marxist doctrine.</p><p>Jack Lively, The Social and Political Thought of Alexis de Tocqueville (1962). An excellent examination of Tocqueville’s thoughts on liberty, social and political democracy, centralization of government, religion, and revolution.</p><p>David McLellan, Karl Marx: His Life and Thought (1973). A detailed biography.</p><p>Guido de Ruggiero, The Story of European Liberalism (1927). Its comparative examination of English, French, German, and Italian liberalism makes this older study a valuable reference tool.</p><p>Jonathan Sperber, The European Revolutions, 1848-1851 (2nd ed.; 2005).
