<p>TWENTIETH CENTURY CANADIAN HISTORY CHC 2D – SUMMATIVE ESSAY</p><p>The purpose of this project is to have you choose an individual who you feel made a significant impact on Canadian History in the 20th Century. This is not intended to be a biographical report, rather you are to make and defend a case explaining how your topic is or was a person of strong Character by highlighting the contributions made by this individual. You are to gather information and expand your research from a selected historical period within the century and link these concepts back to your original thesis. To provide some direction in conducting your research, you should contemplate the following questions:</p><p> a) What attributes makes a person one who possesses a strong and admirable Character? b) How did the individual make Canada better or worse through his/her efforts? c) How has this project changed the way that you view Canada, Canadians, and Canadian history?</p><p>The written component should be 3.5 typed and double spaced pages, following the persuasive essay format. This research essay will present facts that support a particular point of view or argument and will contain a thesis that will tell the reader what you are trying to prove. Remember, facts (evidence) are used to support opinions (arguments).</p><p>This is a multi-stage process. You will only be formally graded on your final product BUT in order to be successful it is highly recommended you complete all of the following stages before moving on.</p><p>STAGE 1: Working thesis and developing outline DUE: Friday May 20th </p><p>STAGE 2: Rough Draft (to be handed in and will be graded by Mr Dotz.) DUE: Thursday May 26th</p><p>STAGE 3: FINAL DAY TO HAND IN ANY OUTLINE OR ROUGH DRAFT Friday May 27th</p><p>STAGE 4: Final Draft of Essay DUE: Wednesday June 1st Possible (but not limited to) Historical Figure:</p><p>1. Belaney, Archibald Stanfield (1888-1938) - (known as Grey Owl) conservationist who falsely presented himself as an Aboriginal person and worked to save the beavers of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. 2. Fox, Terry (1958-1981) - attempted one-legged cross country run for cancer re- search 3. Hansen, Rick (1957-) - paraplegic athlete who completed an around the world marathon for spinal cord injury research 4. Sir Fleming, Sandford (1827-1915) - inventor of the system of Standard Time zones 5. Douglas, Tommy 1904-1986) - introduced publicly-funded health care in Canada; commonly known as the Father of Medicare 6. Air Marshall Bishop, William Avery (1894-1956) - (commonly known as Billy Bishop) World War I flying ace 7. Captain Brown, Roy (1893-1944) - World War I fighter pilot officially credited with shooting down the Red Baron 8. Lieutenant-General Sir Currie, Arthur (1875-1933) - first Canadian commander of the Canadian Expeditionary Force 9. Lieutenant-General Dallaire, Roméo (1946-) - UN peacekeeping General, attempted to prevent the Rwandan Genocide 10. Lieutenant Colonel McCrae, John (1872-1918) - soldier, poet, author of In Flanders' Fields 11. McLuhan, Marshall (1911-1980) - communications theorist, coined phrase "the medium is the message" and "global village" 12. Suzuki, David CC OBC LLD (hc) ScD (hc) ScDEnv (hc) ScDComm (hc) DHL (hc) (1936-) - geneticist and science popularizer 13. Any Canadian Prime Minister. 14. Any member of the Famous Five 15. Any member from the Group of Seven 16. Any other Canadian Historical figures as approved by Mr. Dotzenroth</p>
