Viewing Aquatic Plants ALGAE

Viewing Aquatic Plants – ALGAE

Purpose: To view various specimens of algae to become more familiar with the diversity of morphology (form) in this broad group of aquatic plants. To understand and identify the process of conjugation in Spirogyra.

Materials: - Light Microscope - Prepared slides : 1. Chlamydomonas, 2. Volvox 3. Spirogyra (vegetative/multiple chloroplasts) 4. Spirogyra Conjugation (vegetative/conjugation)

Procedures: 1. View and sketch several specimens, then make three sketches of “Spirogyra - Vegetative and Conjugation” As listed on p.444 of BIOLOGY – Miller-Levine.

Background Information:

Spirogyra Reproduction

Sexual- CONJUGATION: Exchange of genetic information between two similar cells)

Steps of Conjugation:

1. Two filaments (strands) come in contact with each other.

2. The cells of each strand develop swellings which grow towards each other and eventually touch.

3. The ends of the swellings dissolve, producing a tube leading from 1 cell to the other. The tube is called a Conjugation Tube.

4. The contents of 1 cell pass through the tube and join with the contents of the other cell. The nuclei join forming a zygote.

5. A thick wall forms around the zygote to produce a zygospore. The wall protects the zygote from heat, cold, or dryness. In fair conditions, the zygospore will hatch and form a new filament.

6. The cell wall dissolves, leaving the zygospores to wait for a favorable climate.

Name: ______Date: ______Block: ______

Viewing Aquatic Plants – ALGAE

Purpose: To view various specimens of algae to become more familiar with the diversity of morphology (form) in this broad group of aquatic plants.
