The teacher asked the student to write a report about Althea Gibson, the famous tennis player. Althea Gibson Althea Gibson was born the daughter of a sharecropper in 1927. Her family moved to New York when she was only one year old. Althea grew up strong and healthy. Althea did not like to go to her grandmother's because she just wanted to play with her friends. Althea learned to play tennis at the Harlem River Tennis Club. She learned about footwork and sportsmanship. Soon, in 1946, she won the national black girls' championship. At eighteen years of age, Althea met Dr. Eaton and Dr. Johnson. Together the two doctors agreed to give Althea training and education because they wanted her to break down racial barriers for black people in tennis. Dr. Eaton and Dr. Johnson were right. Althea and Dr. Eaton played tennis together. In 1950 Althea Gibson was the first black person to become part of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association.
