This competition was a little different, because the spotlight is on student athletes with disabilities. The event was organized by Jeffco Adaptive Athletics with 19 different teams, representing a wide range of grade levels and schools from across Jeffco. “Soccer day is such a wonderful event,” said Fletcher Miller Principal Bob Barrows. “This is just a chance to get all of these kids with significant support needs the opportunity to participate.” View the Jeffco Adaptive Athletics 2014-15 schedule in basketball, hockey and softball days. Students start practicing on a mannequin head, but within a few weeks, they begin working with real customers. Attendance is up and assistant principal Rosemary Smith believes the increase is a consequence of an improving economy. “Anecdotally anyway, we see careers in hospitality-related fields increase when people have money to spend at spas and salons,” said Smith. At the end of the school year, Warren Tech’s Cosmo program offers the public 10-day spa packages, including hair, skin and nail treatments. Proceeds from the services help the school purchase equipment and supplies. The Courts in the Community program visits schools around the state twice a year to introduce the court to the public and to also teach students about the judicial process. "It's about transparency and education," said Colorado Supreme Court Justice Brian Boatright. "We want the kids to see and have access to the third branch of government, and we want them to see how it works and how decisions are made." Nominated by their principals and peers, the 2014 Jeffco teacher honorees are: Stein Elementary School dual-language teacher Laurin Haber-Cruz, Wheat Ridge 5-8 School math teacher Scott Walker and Wheat Ridge High School art teacher Frank Scaglione. The Jeffco high school student honorees are: Alameda International High School student Daniil Arushanov, Jefferson High School student Carina Wilson, Two Roads Charter student Eli Graham and Wheat Ridge High School student Helen Castillo. “We were overwhelmed with so many great nominations this year that the selection process was very difficult.” said Denise Delgado, executive director of the Jeffco Schools Foundation. “We want everyone to have a chance to hear these stories and meet these inspiring teacher and student leaders.” Plan to be inspired at the annual event that honors everyday heroes on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities.
