STUDENT ATHLETES CHALLENGE EACH OTHER IN COMPETITION Fletcher Miller Special School recently hosted some special student athletes from around the district at the annual Soccer Day In Jeffco. This competition was a little different, because the spotlight is on student athletes with disabilities. The event was organized by Jeffco Adaptive Athletics with 19 different teams, representing a wide range of grade levels and schools from across Jeffco. “Soccer day is such a wonderful event,” said Fletcher Miller Principal Bob Barrows. “This is just a chance to get all of these kids with significant support needs the opportunity to participate.” View the Jeffco Adaptive Athletics 2014-15 schedule in basketball, hockey and softball days. WARREN TECH OFFERS CAREER TRAINING WITH STYLE Warren Tech Career and Technical High School’s popular cosmetology program or Cosmo and has been a school centerpiece at the school since 1973. Students start practicing on a mannequin head, but within a few weeks, they begin working with real customers. Attendance is up and assistant principal Rosemary Smith believes the increase is a consequence of an improving economy. “Anecdotally anyway, we see careers in hospitality-related fields increase when people have money to spend at spas and salons,” said Smith. At the end of the school year, Warren Tech’s Cosmo program offers the public 10-day spa packages, including hair, skin and nail treatments. Proceeds from the services help the school purchase equipment and supplies. Watch the video version of this story on JPS-TV, the official Jeffco Schools YouTube channel.
RALSTON VALLEY HOLDS HIGH COURT Court was in session at Ralston Valley High School (RVHS) as the Colorado Supreme Court heard oral arguments two real cases in front of RVHS students. The Courts in the Community program visits schools around the state twice a year to introduce the court to the public and to also teach students about the judicial process. "It's about transparency and education," said Colorado Supreme Court Justice Brian Boatright. "We want the kids to see and have access to the third branch of government, and we want them to see how it works and how decisions are made."
