<p> Academic Support Program Course Syllabus</p><p>Perquisites: Required for all new students who are participating in high school sports at Westmont HS and/or have a total GPA below 2.5. Semester: Fall 2008 Instructor: Mark Kaanapu Email: [email protected] Tel: 831-253-2157 Office Hours: Mon and Tue 3-4 Required Text: The Confident Student, fifth edition by Carol C. Kanar, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston.2004 Required Participation in On-Campus Events: As announced by instructor</p><p>Course Description, Objectives, and Rationale: This 1 unit class is offered by the Academic Success Center and is mandatory for all new students who are participating in high school sports at Westmont HS. The purpose of the course is too help student improve their overall academic, time management, and stress management skills as well as to serve as a forum for discussion about social coping skills to better connect the student to the Westmont High School community. Course Requirements: 1. The class will meet Daily 2. Passing with a C or better is required for high school graduation. 3. Mandatory Attendance. 3 unexcused absences will mean an automatic F in the course. 4. Grading will be determined as followed. a. Attendance 35% b. In-Class exercises 25%- c. Weekly grade check and assignment sheets 25% d. Class Projects and Participation 15% A=100-90% B= 90-80% C= 80-70% D= 55-70% F= below 55 % Class Assignment Schedule:</p><p>Week 1: Intro and Review of Syllabus Organization of Class portfolio Week 2: In Class exercise on Learning Styles Video on Note Taking Skills Week 2 How do I take in and process information Date Rape/Sexual Assault - Week 3 Note Taking Scouting Report concerning professor lectures Roommate Issues</p><p>Week 4 Time Management 25 ways to get the most out of now Alcohol and other Drugs</p><p>Week 5 Exploring the library</p><p>Week 6 Learning styles and connecting to mnemonic devices Money Management</p><p>Week 7 Testing-How to prepare and manage or disarm tests Stress Management</p><p>Week 8 Reading and Writing -Plagiarism -Use of concept maps -Learning style applications Sexual Education- Choices</p><p>Week 9-Degree Map -Planning for next semester beyond - Planning for the Future Ethics and Character Building</p><p>Week 10 Alumni Services and Internship programs Diversity</p><p>Week 11 Organize and planning for Finials</p>
