The Chemicals of Life

The Chemicals of Life Chapter 1.2

Organic chemicals are compounds that were traditionally believed to be produced solely by living organisms. While we have been able to mimic or reproduce many of these compounds in a lab setting, organic compounds tend to be composed of three main elements; Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen; with small clusters, or functional grouping, that may contain Sulfur, Nitrogen, phosphorus etc.

Explain why carbon is so important to the make-up of organic compounds, or hydrocarbons.

What is a functional group and how does it influence an organic molecule?

Complete the table below with information from pg. 25

Group Chemical Formula Structural Ball-and-stick Found in Formula model Copy Figure 3 from pg. 27 into your note and locate and name all the functional groups found in this compound.

Macromolecules are large biological compounds important to life. Many of these molecules are composed of repeating subunits or monomers. These compounds are built through dehydration or anabolic reactions and broken down by condensation or hydrolysis reactions. Explain how dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis reactions work.
