U.C.T. MATHEMATICS COMPETITION PLEASE PASS ONTO THE HEAD OF MATHEMATICS Hi Everyone Could Heads of Mathematics please brief your departments on these arrangements? Thank you for agreeing to help with the organisation of the UCT Mathematics Competition on 16 April 2015. The attached Excel spreadsheet will show you the grade to which you have been assigned, your venue, whether you are involved with pairs or individuals, and whether you are involved with invigilation or registration. Those who are in charge (i/c) of anything are also indicated. The job of the registration team is to hand out the answer forms and show students how to interpret their labels. Please will you also mark off on the master list the students (individuals and pairs) to whom you give answer sheets? Those marked as “in charge” will collect the answer sheets and lists from the Mathematics Building. The registration team’s job will be done by about 20h00. 3. Full instructions for invigilation will be given on the evening. Those marked as “in charge” will collect the question papers and rough paper from the Mathematics Building. The invigilating team’s job should be done by about 21h30. 4. Please note that your venue is given (in most cases) by a building and a number / letter. The number / letter refers to the room or lecture theatre within that building. Many Thanks! Neil Eddy (021 797 4247 [email protected]) INVIGILATION 2015 Cynthia Sher 021 650-3193 7.00pm: Convenors of each venue to collect question papers and rough work books: Room 216. 7.15pm: Meet the rest of the team in your venue. Admit pupils to the venue, Bags should be kept under their desks with their cell phones and calculators inside, not left outside. Make sure that pupils from the same school do not sit near each other but are at least two seats away in every direction. Write instructions on the board, if possible. Stress that CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED. 7.35pm: Instruct pupils to fill in their personal details clearly on the answer sheet and sign the form. Chief invigilators must read out the instructions on the cover of the question paper. All instructions must be given in English and Afrikaans. While the instructions are being given, the other invigilators should hand out rough work books. 7.40pm: Hand out the question papers. Note that EACH MEMBER of a pair is to be given a question paper. Instruct pupils NOT to open the question paper until told to do so. 7.45pm: Examination starts. Instruct the pupils to check that their question papers have been properly printed. During the examination, pairs are allowed to consult each other. During the examination the Answer Sheets should not be left exposed on the desks. 8.00pm onwards: Invigilators take turns to go for tea and sandwiches in the Mathematics Building (Room 331), but need to be back in their venue by 8.30 pm. Remember to fill in an envelope legibly, with name, address and postal code, so as to receive a competition booklet. Return all extra copies of the papers and rough work books to the Mathematics Building. You may collect a full set of papers and answers at the end from Room 213 in the Mathematics Building. 8.55 pm Give a 5 minute warning. 9.00 pm Examination stops. Collect all scripts. 9.10 pm Read out answers, which will have been delivered to you during the latter half of the competition. Ask pupils to tidy up scrap paper, chairs etc. if necessary and check for lost property under their seats. Impress upon pupils not to wander alone on the campus, but stay in groups while waiting for their lifts. If any students are not collected they should report to the Mathematics Building. Check the venue for lost property. Return lost property and unclaimed bags and calculators to the Mathematics Building. Return all Answer Sheets to the Mathematics Building (Room 216). Invigilators are requested to help sort the Answer Sheets into alphabetical order by schools and then numerical order within the school). Keep the blue sheets separate. 9.05 pm Collect your set of question papers and answers from room 216 competition office (for all invigilators and registration teachers).
