History on the Internet

There many excellent resources for the study of history available on the Internet. Keep in mind, however, that not everything published on the Internet is reliable information. We should all be careful and use our commonsense when surfing the Internet.

One of the outcomes of a history class is to learn to look critically for signs that the information is trustworthy (for example, the use of citations that can be verified, accredited sources, a peer-reviewed journal). Always check the information you learn form online against reliable sources elsewhere (and that does NOT mean just checking two Internet sources because often one site just borrows information from another without checking the information first).

Some useful online resources include:

GENERAL:

Ancient World Web -- a comprehensive index of ancient history and archaeology resources online

ANCIENT NEAR EAST AND EGYPT:

ABZU

Exploring Ancient World Cultures

ANCIENT GREECE AND ROME

Ancient Art

Ancient Greek World virtual gallery -- a museum portal to the world of Ancient Greece (with some links to Rome )

Diotima: Materials for the study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World

The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization (a PBS site)

METIS: A QTVR Interface for Ancient Greek Archaeological Sites Perseus This website has excellent resources, including a Greek history textbook, and thousands of images of sculpture and architecture.

Roman Emperors

Visual Tour through Late Antiquity

THE MIDDLE AGES

ORB : The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies

The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies

Later medieval research guide -- custom-made research pointers in high- and late- medieval history

THE RENAISSANCE, REFORMATION, AND LATER

Virtual Renaissance

1492: An ongoing voyage -- Library of Congress exhibit on Europe and America up to the early 1600s

PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS

Internet Ancient History Sourcebook

Internet Medieval Sourcebook

MUSEUMS:

The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC)

The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) The Oriental Institute (University of Chicago)

The Kelsey Museum (University of Michigan)

The British Museum (London)

The Louvre Museum (Paris)

Click HERE for a list of other museums with collections from Egypt, Greece, Rome.

SEARCH ENGINE:

Argos: Limited Area Search of the Ancient and Medieval Internet

OTHER HELPFUL WEBSITES

The Encyclopedia Britannica (This is not a free site, but you can sign up for a one-time 14 day free pass)
