Briefly, all foci were first transformed to Talairach kernel in order to account for various sources of spatial error (FWHM=20mm). After an effect-size signed map of the GM differences was separately recreated for each study, the mean map was obtained by calculating the mean of the study maps, weighted by the inverse of each study variance, which accounted for inter-study heterogeneity. Finally, a threshold was set for the meta-analytic maps using a voxel-level threshold of p < 0.001(uncorrected) and a cluster-level threshold of 10 voxels. Additional jackknife sensitivity analyses were further conducted by excluding one of the samples each time to assess the robustness of the results across different studies. Results Descriptive quartile analysis revealed that WM reductions were detected in one large cluster extending from bilateral midbrain to regions close to thalamus and basal ganglia (peak Talairach coordinate x= 4, y= -12, z= -6, SDM=-4.505, p< 0.00001, 2591 voxels) [Fig 3]. No WMV increase was observed. These results remained largely unchanged following jackknife sensitivity analysis.

Fig 3 Coronal, sagittal, and axial sections for white matter reductions in PSP patients compared with healthy control References 1.
