<p> Speech and Articulation in English as a Second Language SPCH 1120-302 Spring 2007 Tuesday 4:00 - 6:30 (Room 1222)</p><p>Instructor: Ms. Pamela Hallene – Office 1132H [email protected], 455-6127</p><p>Office Hours: T & R: 9:30-10:00, 12:30-2:00, 3:15-4:00, 6:30-7:00 or by appointment</p><p>Materials: Required - Textbook: Focus on Pronunciation 2, by Lane, Linda Optional: Small Mirror</p><p>Course Description: Speech ESL is the pronunciation and listening course in the sequence of ESL course offerings at the Community College of Rhode Island. As such, this course is intended to precede CCRI’s Oral Communication / Public Speaking course. The I.P.A., International Phonetic Alphabet, will be learned and practiced within the context of typical conversational vocabulary. As well, intonation, syllable stress, rhythm, and connected speech will be studied.</p><p>Prerequisite: Intermediate-level ESL studies. Previous education in the native language which includes high school or equivalency is required.</p><p>Outcomes: At the end of this course, students should be: 1. Able to practice all vowel and consonant sounds / symbols of the IPA. 2. Able to follow the rules and patterns of intonation. 3. Aware of syllable stress within words and word stress within phrases. 4. Able to decipher connected speech in rapid American English.</p><p>Requirements: The textbook will be used at each class meeting along with supplemental materials provided by the teacher. Attendance is required, especially due to the importance of class participation in this course. Students will be assessed from their performance on quizzes, a mid-term exam, a final exam, and a pronunciation project.</p><p>Grading Policy: Students will receive letter grades of A, B, C or F.</p><p>Quizzes 30% Attendance and Participation 15% Mid-term Exam 20% Pronunciation Project 10% Final Exam 25% </p><p>There will be several quizzes throughout the semester. The quizzes may not be announced before. You must be prepared to take a quiz on any day.</p><p>There will be a mid-term and final exam. The dates for each exam will be announced before. This course is designed for students from any non-English language background, and the student may be at any level of English writing ability. It is a course that should improve the student’s listening ability just as much as his/her speaking ability. Keep in mind that it is nearly impossible for an adult to become completely fluent in American spoken English, particularly within fifteen weeks.
