<p>Mr. Boothby Name______Sociology Lecture Notes CH 7 pt4 “Deviance and Conformity” Read pages 204-211 in your textbook before you begin to answer these questions. Remember to use complete sentences. Students that keep these sheets complete and in order are less likely to become criminals! 1. Read box 7.2 “Topless Dancers: Managing Stigma in a Deviant Occupation”. What was the Thompson/Harred study about? How did the dancers cope with the stigma? What would they say their job was if asked by parents or friends? What did they deny their job causes harm? What are your thoughts? </p><p>2. Do you feel a “topless dancer” would be (or should be) ashamed if their Dad, Uncle, or possibly ex-boss came in and saw them stripping? How might the dancer and other person react? WHY</p><p>3. What is “Social Control”? What are ways that our school encourages this? Think about attendance… </p><p>4. What is voluntary or internalized social control? How effective is it and why?</p><p>5. How can gossip be a strong force in keeping people on the “straight and narrow” or doing the right thing? Do you fear being the source of gossip at WHS? </p><p>6. Which country is the most violent post-industrial/industrial country in the entire world? Does this surprise you? Explain why this might be?</p><p>7. Safeway a store popular in the Pacific Northwest reported annual theft rates on their goods at 4% of yearly sales. This means 4% of everything in the store is stolen! Does this surprise you? SHOULD THE USA CRACK DOWN ON MINOR CRIMES LIKE THEFT? Explain #7 on the back of this page. Write ¾ page minimum! Is this hurting our country? What should we do? What will you do??? SHOULD DEVIANT PUNKS GET STUFF FOR FREE WHILE WE PAY???</p><p>8. What are the three types of crimes and what is law enforcements role (police)?</p><p>9. Take a look at FIGURE 7.3 “Crime Clock”. Remember this is reported crime…Not crimes, which are never discovered (Like the Safeway thief that gets away with a cart full of diapers)! What are your thoughts on these crime rates? Are you surprised? Which figures stand out to you?</p><p>10. Read Box 7.3 “Getting Tough on Criminals: Back to the Chain Gangs”. Is this the wave of the future or just a return to the past? Do you think we will get too tough on criminals? Are the years of getting away with easy crime behind us? What is your opinion??? Answer #10 on the back of this page!</p>
