An Affair To Remember III — Dec. 6, 2008 1 e welcome you once again to the beautiful hills of north Georgia during one of the most festive holiday seasons of the year. We wish that we could tell you that we were once again in the midst of a rainy season, but sadly that is not true for 2008 as it was not true for 2007. The severe Wdrought that we have been under was lessened very little during the first part of this year and we are once again praying for a few rainy days! But that hasn’t deflated our spirits and we still have a good selection of workable cattle for you to take home with the knowledge that they will work in any part of the country. A lot of things have transpired in the two years since “An Affair to Remember II”, including the addition of another grandchild, our first granddaughter, born in June (one day before Truman’s birthday). We have so enjoyed the addition of these two wonderful grandchildren and look forward to their participation in Whaley Polled Herefords in the future. Starr served a term as chairman on the National Organization of Poll-ettes (NOP) Board and along with our son, Cameron, got to perform on stage with Randy Owen at “Music on the Mountain” in May of this year. How can they ever top that? We have also lost friends to untimely deaths, saw friends disperse cattle herds and watched our country caught in the throes of another political campaign to determine our country’s future. Almost too much to absorb in a short two-year span! During this time we have very diligently worked to build a herd of animals that would be worthy of presenting for your inspection and approval at this year’s “An Affair to Remember III.” We feel that we have a broad spectrum of genetics to offer you in this years sale. As of August, 2008, WPH became the proud owner of Remitall Route 66 and he will now be walking the hills of north Georgia very soon! Cameron, Erin, We will be offering the first of our Route 66 calves in this sale along with the first Pearl Reece and Eva daughters that we have parted with. In addition to these, we will have a generous selection of daughters from our battery of donors, including the T16 cow. My association with this wonderful family began many years ago when the herd health team consisted of Truman, Mr. Carl Whaley and myself. During the early days, Mr. Carl, armed with aW feed bucket and brush, trained all the cows to stand still in the pasture while he brushed and groomed them. The program has grown tremendously since those days, but the attention to detail and quality remain the same. Tim Connell, with help from James Ponders, does an excellent job of managing the herd. Through the years, we have tried to keep in place the most comprehensive herd health program pos- sible. This program includes vaccination of all adult cattle for IBR, PI3, BVD, BRSV, Vibrio, Five-way Lepto, Haemophilus Somnus, Pinkeye and Eight Way Clostridium. Calves are vaccinated at approxi- mately three months of age with a similar program. The process is repeated at weaning. In order to insure the best possible prevention, we have moved to a modified live vaccine for viral vaccinations. All heifers are calfhood vaccinated for Brucellosis with RB-51 Strain vaccine. All cattle are dewormed twice yearly and dewormers are rotated as needed to prevent parasite resistance. Whaley Polled Herefords is both a Certified Brucellosis Free and TB Free herd. Their herd number is 278. The health of this herd is excellent. A sound nutritional program which includes proper pasture fertil- ization and winter protein supplementation is also in place. A good quality vitamin-mineral supplement is available free-choice to all cattle. Health papers have been written on all sale lots and any needed permit numbers for interstate shipment will be obtained for you. I will be present on sale day and will be glad to answer any questions about the Whaley herd health program or just to discuss one of my favorite subjects, beef cattle herd health.
