EDITORIAL MS STUBNITZ ROTTERDAM 2005 The long awaited return of the ROS 701, better known as the MS Stubnitz is finally coming to reality. The former high sea trawler which currently serves as a cultural production platform is setting sail for the docks of Rotterdam . Back in the year 2001 the MS Stubnitz held service as a mobile stage during the festivity’s which were held as a part of the “Rotterdam: Cultural Capital of Europe 2001” events. The MS Stubnitz then proved to be a very special and atmospheric background for a number of dance events. Sound Architecture came to the idea of bringing back the 78 meter long trawler when they were searching for original locations. Since a period of time complaints started coming out of the Rotterdam party crowd about the lack of innovating and interesting locations which were being used by the different Rotterdam based event promoters and record labels. Sound Architecture has always been one of those organisations who try to create a stimulating environment, were the crowd, the music and the scenery blends together as if their were one. From June the 2 nd till June the 24 th MS Stubnitz and Sound Architecture are serving you a variety of electronic music orientated events. During this period MS Stubnitz will be the stage for a large number of artists, who are expected to re-set the boundaries of electronic music. The events will rise above the current club standards in Rotterdam for programming, as the line-up clearly shows. No longer will there be a separation between the various styles of electronic dance music. Visitors can expect anything ranging from techno to “warp-like” electronica, minimal click house to nu-jazz / broken beats and electro to drum ‘n bass. Even ambient sound scapes and performances by rock PREVIEW ROTTERDAM ELECTRONIC and punk bands will be present during MUSIC FESTIVAL these events. The ports of Malmö (Sweden), St. Petersburg (Russia) and Hamburg (Germany) were entered. In 1998 the renewed Stubnitz left the harbour for the first time on request of the Cultural Capital of Europe, Stockholm. In 1999 2005 Lübeck and Hamburg were the ports to be called at, in 2000 cultural capital of Europe Rotterdam was the inviting town, in 2002 Stubnitz took part in cultural capital of Europe Brugge (Belgium) and in the same year doing a festival in Amsterdam in cooperation with kinetisch-noord, for 2003 the ports of Szczecin (Poland) and Hamburg were the goals, in 2004 Riga and Kleipeda. 2005 is the most ambitious year so far, after Copenhagen and Rotterdam it’s time for Newcastle, Amsterdam, Dunkirk and Antwerp. „Stubnitz shows clearly that there are possibilities for operating large traditional crafts aside from the traditional idea of a museum ship. Maybe there is a chance for a permanent realization of the idea of a floating cultural centre on board a traditional deep-seas trawling vessel in the operation as a part of our European maritime heritage” (Dr.Ingo Heidbrink, Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum.
