He studied at the Peabody Conservatory and Columbia University Teachers College. Newsom was a member of the United States Air Force Band dance band, the Airmen of Note, from 1953 through 1956, with whom he toured Europe and North Africa. During the 1950's he also worked as a studio musician in New York. With Benny Goodman he toured Latin America in 1961 and the former Soviet Union in 1962; he recorded with Goodman’s big band in 1962, 1964, and 1967. He also recorded with the Ruby Braff and Marshall Brown swing sextet in 1962. That same year he joined NBC’s music staff and from 1963 played in the band on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, becoming its assistant conductor in 1968. Tommy Newsom stayed as both arranger and performer for a full thirty years with The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson until its final broadcast on May 22, 1992. Tommy Newsom’s arrangements and performances can be heard on recordings of Doc Severinsen, Billy Butterfield, Benny Goodman, Boots Randolph, jazz/Brazilian guitarist Charlie Byrd, as well as Newsom’s own projects. He continues to perform, arrange and record, working with various jazz and symphonic ensembles. iv Scope and Content Note The Tommy Newsom Collection comprises full scores and orchestral parts for 267 titles, arranged for dance band, symphonic orchestra, and various smaller ensembles. The collection includes manuscripts and printed and photocopied materials. The collection extends over fifty years of Tommy Newsom’s work, from arrangements of dance band music in 1947 to arrangements for trumpeter Doc Severinsen’s recording in 1999. Most of the music dates from the thirty years Newsom spent arranging for the The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Many of the selections were arranged for featured performers such as vocalists Vic Damone, Crystal Gayle, Patti Page, Paul Anka, Joe Williams, Glen Campbell, and Dianne Carroll; trumpeter Doc Severinsen; drummers Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, and Duffy Jackson; trombonist Urbie Green; saxophonist Boots Randolph; and Newsom on tenor sax. A few arrangements in the collection are not by Newsom and are credited accordingly. v Container List MUSIC MANUSCRIPTS Box/Folder Contents 21/1 12 O’clock jump Photocopied parts Dance band 13/1 1970 medley Ms. full score Dance band Adestes fidelis 13/2 Photocopy of full score Brass choir 13/3 Ms. full score Small ensemble 13/4 Adios Ms. full score Dance band 13/5 Air & rondo Sketch and photocopy of full score Concert band/alto sax feature 21/2 Photocopied parts Alto sax/conductor 21/3 Air mail special Ms./photocopied parts Dance band (for Louis Bellson) 1/1 Alone again Ms. full score Symphony orchestra/vocal feature (for Paul Anka) 1/2 Anyone can whistle Photocopy of full score Woodwind quintet 13/6 Aphrodite’s nightie Ms. full score Dance band/trumpet feature 13/7 April in Paris Photocopy of full score Dance band (for Louis Bellson) 21/4 Photocopied parts Dance band (for Louis Bellson) Tommy Newsom Collection 1 MUSIC MANUSCRIPTS Box/Folder Contents 13/8 [Bach] fugue #2 Photocopy of full score (2 copies) Dance band 21/5 Photocopied parts Dance band 13/9 [Bach] prelude #24 Ms. full score Dance band 21/6 Photocopied parts Dance band 22/1 Bachianas Brasileiras #5 Photocopied parts Dance band 1/3 The bad and the beautiful Ms. full score Symphony orchestra 22/2 Photocopied parts Symphony orchestra 22/3 Bar B Q Photocopied parts Dance band 13/10 Baretta Photocopy of full score Dance band 22/4 Printed parts Dance band Photocopied parts Dance band 22/5 Basie Photocopied parts Dance band (for Louis Bellson) Arranged by Sammy Nestico 13/11 The Bells of St. Mary’s Ms. full score Small ensemble/vocal feature (for Vic Damone) 22/6 Berimbau Ms./photocopied parts Dance band 13/12 Berlin medley Ms. full score Dance band Tommy Newsom Collection 2 MUSIC MANUSCRIPTS Box/Folder Contents 1/4 Big band medley Photocopy of full score Symphony orchestra 14/1 Photocopy of full score Symphony orchestra 23/1 Photocopied parts (on folder: latest version, 10/20/88) Symphony orchestra 24/1 Billy Joe II Photocopied parts Dance band 14/2 A bit Byas’d Photocopy of full score Dance band/tenor sax feature 1/5 Blazing saddles Ms. full score Symphony orchestra 14/3 Blues in the altogether Ms. full score Dance band w/strings 24/2 Ms. parts Dance band 24/3 Blues in the night Photocopied parts Dance band 1/6 Body and soul Ms. full score String quartet 14/4 Photocopy of full score Dance band/tenor sax feature 24/4 Photocopied parts Dance band w/strings 24/5 La Boehme Photocopied parts Dance band 1/7 Brazil Photocopy of full score Symphony orchestra 1/8 Broadway, my way Photocopy of full score Symphony orchestra Tommy Newsom Collection 3 MUSIC MANUSCRIPTS Box/Folder Contents 14/5 The bull Ms. full score Dance band/trumpet feature 1/9 Bumble bee Ms. full score Symphony orchestra/trumpet feature 1/10 Call the police Photocopy of full score Dance band/vocal feature 1/11 Caravan Photocopy of full score Symphony orchestra/trombone feature 14/6 Chicago Ms. full score Dance band/trumpet feature 25/1 Chime festival Photocopied parts Dance band w/orchestra 14/7 Christmas bells Ms. full score Dance band/vocal feature (for Patti Page) 1/12 Christmas child Ms. full score Small ensemble Christmas song 1/13 Ms. full score Dance band 1/14 Ms. full score Symphony orchestra/flugel horn feature Close your eyes 14/8 Ms. full score Small ensemble 14/9 Ms. full score Dance band/tenor sax feature 25/2 Ms. parts Dance band 1/15 Closing Photocopy of full score Dance band w/orchestra Tommy Newsom Collection 4 MUSIC MANUSCRIPTS Box/Folder Contents 1/16 [O] Come all ye faithful Ms. full score Dance band 14/10 Come in out of the rain Ms. full score Dance band/vocal feature 26/1 Come Sunday Photocopied parts Dance band 26/2 Come together Photocopied parts Dance band/vocal feature (for Farrah Fawcett, Lee Majors) 1/17 Copacabana Photocopy of full score Symphony orchestra 26/3 Cute Photocopied parts Dance band Arranged by Neal Hefti 2/1 Dance band medley Photocopy of full score Symphony orchestra 15/1 David dance -
