GajewskiFull stuff of information about Madness, their roots and career up to now. First album used as the point of departure for a story about Nutty Boys, their music, lyrics and gigs. Indispensable title for all those interested in Magnificent 7, ska and Britain of the 70. and 80, for die-hard fans of Madness. Just "One Step Beyond" the knowldege we knew so far. Don't read that... read this!By Andrew TonkinThe album One Step Beyond... has not only a serious party groove but a strong sense of friendship and cameraderie; Edwards' observant and amusing book maintains this warm spirit. Edwards is a musician himself: as a member of Madness contemporaries The Higsons, he's toured with and collaborated with the group. As such he's managed to secure interviews with every member and participant on the original album and peppers their comments throughout. But he doesn't use his insider cred to skip the hard work of analyzing the songs themselves. As is often the case with this series, the book is broken down to cover one song per chapter, and Edwards covers each in great depth. He also focuses on the band members' contributions to the songwriting process: with no main songwriter at this point, five of the six members are credited on compositions here, and it's fun to track who did what. The book offers warmth, insight, and humor in covering this enjoyable debut, a light read about the heaviest sound around. Madness came to prominence in the UK in the wake of the Punk/New Wave explosion and must be seen in the context of Britain in the late 70s, musically, socially and politically. Their first single was released by Two-Tone, an independent label run by fellow ska enthusiasts. One Step Beyond isn't the best album in the world - it's not even the best album by Madness. It is, however, a great record and an exceptional debut album - fully formed despite half the band still being in their teens - and it remains as exhilarating, inspiring and as much fun as when people first heard it nearly 30 years ago. Through extensive interviews with the band, as well as producers Clive Langer Alan Winstanley, Terry Edwards tells the inside story of how Madness rose to be the most successful singles band of the 1980s in the UK charts. "It's impossible to have partaken of popular music over the last three decades without running into Terry Edwards." http://www.madness-central.com/interviews/TerryEdwards.html [Ldeot.ebook] Madness' One Step Beyond...
