In 1958, the Department of Heavy Machinery of HIT and its related specialties moved to the strategic industrial town of Fulaerji, Qiqihar in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and was renamed the School of Heavy Machinery of HIT. In 1960, the school became independent as the Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, and in 1978, it was accredited as a national key institution of higher learning. Starting from 1985, it began to relocate southward to the coastal city of Qinhuangdao and completed the migration in 1997 when it was accredited by the former State Education Commission to adopt the present name of Yanshan University. In 1998, its administration was transferred from the Ministry of Machinery Industry to Hebei Provincial Government (HPG). YSU is co-administrated by the central and local government, in which the latter plays the principal role. In 2006, YSU was co-constructed by the Commission on Science,Technology, and Industry for National Defense and HPG. In 2010, YSU was co-constructed by the National Defense Science and Industry Bureau and HPG. In 2014, YSU was co-constructed by HPG, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Education. YSU campus covers an area of 4,000 mu (or 267 hectares) with a total floor space of 1,000,000m 2 . At present, the university has a faculty and staff of 3,000, including 2,000 teachers, of which 413 are professors (including 200 doctoral advisors) and 630 associate professors. The university has a student population of 39,000. YSU has 11 postdoctoral research stations, 11 first level disciplines authorized to offer doctoral degree, 27 first level disciplines authorized to offer master degree, 9 disciplines authorized to offer professional master degree, 18 disciplines authorized to offer master of engineering, 62 undergraduate programs. With such a wide range of disciplines, YSU has become a multiversity with emphasis laid on engineering studies and importance attached to liberal arts, sciences, economics, management, law, fine arts and education. YSU has 5 national key disciplines, 4 national defense key disciplines and 16 provincial key disciplines and 2 of its disciplines (engineering and materials) are listed in the global top 1% of ESI. YSU has 21 schools/college including the Graduate School, School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Information Science and Engineering, School of Software, School of Economics and Management, School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, School of Science, School of Humanities and Law, School of Public Administration, School of Marxism Studies, School of Foreign Languages, School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering, School of Arts and Design, School of Vehicles and Energy Engineering, School of Physical Education, School of National Defense Science and Technology, Liren College, School of Continuing Education and School of International Exchange. YSU has the State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology, the National Engineering Research Center for Equipment and Technology of Cold Rolling Strip, the State and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Shaping Technology and Equipment, the Key Discipline Laboratory of National Defense for Mechanical Structure and Materials Science under Extreme Conditions, the National Exemplary Institute of Technology Transfer (The 1 Qinhuangdao Yanshan University General Corporation of Technology Development), 2 Coordinative Innovation Center of Hebei Province and 28 key laboratories, engineering centers or social sciences research bases at provincial and ministerial level. YSU also has the National University Science Park and the Yanshan University Press. YSU is known for its world-renowned achievements in the development of whole-set heavy machinery and equipment, the metastable materials and technology, the theory and technology of parallel robots, the technology of fluid transmission and electro-hydraulic servo-systems, the theory and technology of industrial automation, the technology of precision plasticity figuration, the technology of large forging and heat treatment, the technology of mechanical structure and materials under extreme conditions, etc. The university has won 16 national scientific and technological awards consecutively since 2000, including 2 First-class China State Science and Technology Progress Awards, 9 Second-class Awards, 2 State Technology Invention Awards, and 3 Second-class National Natural Sciences Awards. The university has undertaken more than 700 national research projects, including those funded by the 973 Programs, the 863 Programs, as well as the National Natural Sciences Foundation and the National Social Sciences Foundation. In 2013, 2014, two of them were awarded as the Top 10 Scientific Development of China’s Institutions of Higher Learning and the Top 10 National Scientific Development of China. YSU attaches great importance to international academic exchange and collaboration, and has conducted joint study and research programs with 35 world-renowned institutions of higher learning from 17 countries and regions such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Ireland, Korea and Japan, etc. Deeply rooted in Hebei Province with a vision for the whole country and the whole world, possessing an upbeat spirit and innovative mind, bearing the responsibility of advancing educational reform and scientific development, all of the 40,000 faculty, staff and students spare no effort in building Yanshan University into a well-known, multi-disciplinary and engineering-oriented university with advantages at heavy machinery and metastable materials. 2 About CIE The College of International Education (CIE) is a new institute established by Yan Shan University (YSU) as a commitment to the school's ongoing strategy of globalization. Besides the task of enrollment, education and daily management of foreign students, the duty of CIE also includes the promotion of Mandarin Chinese language-learning and administration of national scholarships. Faculty includes more than 40 teachers and 9 regular staff. Along with other part-time teachers, our faculty is well-balanced with a combination of senior, middle-aged and young teachers, who are highly qualified and experienced in teaching and doing research. Since its establishment, CIE has been dedicated to the overall enhancement of the school, which has lead to increased enrollment every year. CIE is now considered as the best choice for students from many different countries as more than 400 students from America, Britain, Russia, Korea, and 40 other countries enter CIE every year. More than 100 among them will attend classes in other schools such as, Economics and Management, Vehicle and Energy, Information and Engineering as undergraduates and postgraduates CIE of YSU has qualified to receive two National Scholarships including the Chinese Government Scholarship and Confucius Institute Scholarship. Meanwhile, we can also provide the Provincial Government Scholarship of Hebei Province and University Scholarship of YSU. By the end of the year 2015, YSU will make available a full array of scholarships to our incoming students. CIE is dedicated to promoting the strengths of our national culture and regards the international promotion of Chinese language and culture as its highest priority. In August 2007 the Toledo Institute of YSU (also the foreign center of TCFL of YSU) has been officially founded at the University of Toledo, Ohio, USA, after which a Confucius Institute was also co-founded in December 2009. 3 About Qinhuangdao The City of Qinhuangdao is situated in the northeastern part of Hebei Province, lying against the Yanshan Mountains to its north and looking south over the Bohai Sea. The city is 280km away from Beijing, the capital of China. Tianjin and Shenyang, two important cities in China, are also within hours by train from Qinhuangdao. Due to its geographic location, Qinhuangdao enjoys convenient transportation as several major railway lines interact here. Both the Beijing-Shenyang Expressway and Coastal Expressway pass through Qinhuangdao, and the newly built Beidaihe Airport receives 500,000 passengers every year. On the oceanside, an international shipping line connects Qinhuangdao to Inchon, a major city in South Korea. Besides that, as an ice-free port, the Port of Qinhuangdao is the world’s largest exporter of fossil fuel energy resources. Its marine transport business extends to more than 130 countries. The city has a long historical standing and a rich cultural heritage. Qinhuangdao, meaning the Island of Emperor Qin in English, is the only city in China named after an emperor. Additionally, the climate here is very pleasant, as summers by the sea are very mild and winters are seldom harsh. It was one of the first cities in China to embrace modern tourism and in a word, makes for an ideal vacation destination. You can enjoy the crystal water in Beidaihe or take
